One way or a little different. You can be distracted by side assignments, but in the context of the plot it’s somehow not entirely logical. After all, the only thing that motivates a person from the Vault is the desire to find his son as quickly as possible, and then suddenly he drops everything and begins, for example, to build a village together with the Minutemen. And then he leaves again to look for his son. Oddball.

In fact, the story with the son is such a slightly awkward excuse to show how the world works. You visit the main attractions, get acquainted with the organizations operating in the ruins of Massachusetts, and then Fallout 4 suddenly remembers that before it there was, after all, the almost great New Vegas, and finally leaves you to your own devices.



The wasteland of the Commonwealth bears little resemblance to the capital. Boston has completely different architecture and other attractions. And he got much less during the war.

After one turning point, the game lets you go free. Shows you four factions with their own rules and their own truth, and invites you to deal with them as you please. The motives of the parties could not be simpler - the question, rather, is whose manner of doing business is closer to you. You begin to make decisions, maneuver between inconvenient options, trying to save longer a good relationship with each faction, find out the rules of their game and, in the midst of other people's affairs, implement your own, best, plan.

And then freedom takes its toll. Side stories finally fit seamlessly into your actions, because the immediate problems are over. You are free to close the topic of confrontation between organizations at any time: you can, say, finish off the head of a faction even in the middle of a plot speech, and the game will offer new way to the ending - like in New Vegas. It's great to discover that Bethesda isn't ignoring what Obsidian did before it.

Something else is sad. After completing the main plot, the hero says that he has found his place in the new world, for some reason he ends his speech with the hackneyed “War never changes”... and that’s all. In past Fallouts, this place featured a detailed analysis of the fates of the cities and characters you met - and there is an opinion that this is one of the main features of the series. But it seems that, having established itself in primacy open world, Bethesda decided that life in the Wasteland couldn't have an ending, and decided not to have one at all. Logical, but still offensive.

The main character (or heroine) is now voiced, but how to treat this is a matter of taste. On the one hand, conversations sound much more natural this way, but on the other hand, it’s much more difficult to identify with the person on the screen.

Dog and everyone else

Karma is conditionally replaced by relationships with companions. Their reaction to your actions is indicated by a message at the top of the screen (“Preston Garvey is delighted with this”), just like in the Telltale games. The tastes of your partners are extremely specific: for example, journalist Piper from Diamond rejoices when you instill justice, ethics and... pick locks with her.

Companions are the characters you'll almost certainly return to the most, because they're the ones you form a connection with first. But, alas, they received much less attention than they deserve. Companions follow you, comment on what they see, but do not interfere in your affairs. A couple of times during the game, everyone will try to start a conversation and vent, and when you really become friends, it will give you a moderately useful skill.

This is usually the extent of the matter. Romances that were previously discussed a lot begin out of the blue after a couple of attempts to flirt and, in fact, lead to nothing except prize-winning sugar remarks when meeting and a temporary increase in experience for a night spent in the same bed.

Preston Garvey, the last of the Massachusetts Minutemen. It is at his instigation that we are building a new civilization on the remains of the Commonwealth.

I would really like the companions to talk more often, but there is nothing surprising here - in Fallout it was almost always more interesting to play alone, and the partners only worked as beasts of burden and diverted the fire to themselves. There is progress in the right direction, but in practice not much has changed.

But in Fallout 4 there is a very nice Dogmeet - aka Dogmeat in the Russian version. Always loyal, never frustrating, and becomes a real terminator if you learn one of the perks.

This is my rifle

Game director Todd Howard said that id Software and one of Bungie's former employees helped with shooting and weapons this time. You can feel it. Fallout 4 fetishizes weapons worse than Borderlands. She teaches him to love: if you memorize craft perks, you can spend dozens of hours with one gun, gradually adding new modules to it. In my case, it was an ordinary blaster, which over time turned from a hand-held scarecrow into a heavy sniper carbine.

In addition to serial items, there are rare collectible barrels, and even if they were not so powerful, they would still be worth appreciating - for their character. Of course, the railway rifle familiar from the third part, shooting with crutches, splits the helmet of a knight of the Brotherhood of Steel in two with a couple of hits, but at the same time releases clouds of steam and rumbles like a steam locomotive - and this is much more interesting about it. There is also a power brass knuckles made from a piece of reinforced concrete attached to a small pile hammer. Or a ship's cannon... it's a motherfucking ship's cannon that shoots cannonballs, you know?

Power armor has become more interesting. While Enclave and Brotherhood of Steel armor used to be essentially high-tier late-game gear, this time you get it almost at the very beginning. But they constantly require maintenance - the cost of repairs and batteries makes it difficult to wear armor constantly until you make a fortune. Towards the end, I attached a jetpack to the paladin armor, painted it pink, and finally stopped getting out of it.

Power armor, like all other equipment, can be reassembled module by module. For example, enhance radiation protection with lead plates or attach a jetpack to your back.

However, wealth Fallout 4 exactly as a shooter is still in question. Yes, marksmanship is encouraged. Yes, it's much more enjoyable to shoot than before. Yes, wild ghouls now crawl out of cracks in the walls and dance funny if you shoot off their hands. Intelligent opponents continue to fall into a stupor from time to time when something unexpected happens, but they use cover, flank and throw grenades as if today is the last day of their lives (here they hit the nail on the head). In terms of mechanics, the battles have become much better.

But! Encounter design is still at the level of “here is the room, here are the enemies, please do something,” which causes many battles to turn into absolute chaos. The V.A.T.S. mode saves the day again, in which the action is inferior to turn-based tactics for a few seconds: time slows down, you calmly select a target and spend action points on shooting. This helps a lot to control what is happening, and even if you try to play Fallout 4 as a pure action game, sometimes including V.A.T.S., the game seems much more focused and generally correct. There is no need to neglect the opportunity to shoot down a grenade in flight.

You can cut off the limbs of robots and ghouls and watch them flounder. People usually die from this.

Two o'clock, time to kill

The role-playing system has been greatly compressed, combining the parameters S.P.E.C.I.A.L. (strength, perception, endurance, charm, etc.), skills (stealth, lockpicking, weaponry, etc.) and perks (classic “talents” for the series that affect your playstyle) on one canvas. You level them up equally with each other, spending the same development points, but the higher the value of the corresponding parameter, the more powerful the perks that you can learn.

Actually the idea is beautiful. Each of the parameters is designed so that the perks associated with it help you find your own approach to battles. With ten units of strength, for example, you can turn power armor into an armored train that rolls enemies into the ground. Heroes with high intelligence focus on the power of energy weapons and saving resources to support armor, and among the perks for charmers is the ability to win over opponents to their side simply by pointing a weapon at them. It doesn’t work for everyone and it doesn’t always work, but it’s definitely worth experimenting with if you want to avoid getting your hands dirty and at the same time avoid stealth.

This is how hero development works in Fallout 4. In the top row are the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. parameters, which affect, among other things, how far you can go down the corresponding perk column.

On the other hand, everything that does not concern combat abilities suffered. For example, I have never seen skills related to crafts and medicine manifest themselves in peaceful situations - to repair something on a quest, you just need to pass an intelligence test, and even then the need arose infrequently. Specific, but always interesting talents like “Eternal Child” have disappeared (added more options when communicating with children), and high charm in dialogues usually simply highlights the most profitable answers and thereby occasionally helps to shorten the road, but more often it simply increases the reward.

No matter how much one would like to solve problems peacefully, the game still encourages military campaigns with or without reason. Bethesda really loves dungeons - or some evil dwarf whispers to the developers that they do dungeons best, so they need to make even more dungeons. Many even potentially super-interesting stories here manage to be reduced to an ordinary combat race through a labyrinth. This is how you imagine the adventure of robbing the city storage facility? Gathering information, preparing equipment, lightning attack, counting seconds! But no, let's instead go to the catacombs and fight ghouls and swampers. It will be better this way.

Mutated yao-gai bears in the Commonwealth do not look as creepy as in the Capital Wasteland, but they turn out to be slightly weaker than the death claws.

Another time, quite by accident, I found a bunker on the edge of the world in which the mayor of Boston hid before the war. I made my way past a series of turrets (cunning helped), robbed all the safes, listened last words mayor. Funny small case— I was glad that at least this time there was no fight. But on the way back from the bunker I was suddenly attacked by Institute synths.

Well, when they tell you: “Go and clear the car plant from raiders,” don’t doubt that you will have to go and clear the car plant, spending a lot of time searching for the only right path to the leader of the bandits. To be completely honest, Fallout 3 I stumbled on this too, but just keep in mind. The peaceful path is rarely a priority here.

Mad, mad Wasteland

At the same time, there are many good moments. For example, the first big plot skirmish in the Freedom Museum among exhibitions depicting iconic episodes American history. Bethesda, as usual, has delivered an impressive archeology and history simulator everywhere you go. In deserted Salem, a lonely old man with a rifle dug in. Some crazy prepper has set up a maze of traps outside Milton Hospital. One of the residents of Diamond talks about ancient game"baseball", during which people beat each other to death with wooden bats. Obsessed with the American War of Independence, robots pledged to defend the Constitution and took up residence aboard the frigate Constitution and defend it.

Piper creates journalism and pesters the townspeople with questions (“Aren’t you afraid that the Institute is kidnapping people and replacing them with synths? - You know, now I’m afraid”), raiders in the art gallery of one very avant-garde master are discussing art, super mutants carry a typical, but every time various heresies, according to the cliché “we are dumb as stones, but we still know better.”

There is an area far to the south of the map where radiation levels are particularly high. Mostly mutants and fanatical followers of the Atom live there.

After Mad Max's storms, Fallout 4's radiation storms aren't nearly as impressive. But there is still something in them.

IN Fallout 4 there's a lot going on, although the details are rarely cohesive—they're just there so Todd Howard can say, “Hi, I'm Todd Howard. We just made an incredibly huge game." There are a lot of things here that are easy to ignore.

You can, say, build settlements as if you were playing The Sims or sculpt a modification in the Creation Kit. The plot of one of the factions is connected to them, and if you learn a specific skill in the charm column, you can make huge money from merchants without lifting a finger. But none of this forces us to use even half of what can be done in the constructor. To plan Electricity of the net, link buttons and switches into logical circuits, build obstacle courses from traps. What is this all for?

There's no need. Just to have it. So that you can build your city, then another, supply them with resources, establish trade relations and be proud of yourself. Or not be proud. It's a Bethesda game, do what you want.

Many ownerless workshops can be appropriated and a new settlement can be founded around them.

Here's a fact: contrary to first impressions Fallout 4 Overall it plays just like the third part. Engine from Skyrim(aka the engine from Morrowind, but with a million add-ons) reveals itself from afar - with the same manners, the same glitches, the same loads between interiors and exteriors. I must say, quite long if you play on a console.

At the same time, questions like “what did Bethesda spend five years doing” are gradually disappearing. It's obvious. For detailed modification of equipment and construction. For legions of quests and random finds. The ruined Boston - beautiful and very similar to the real one. In the end, to a brilliant image of the collapsed American dream from the forties, with nuclear Chryslers, radroaches and Billie Holiday songs on Diamond's radio wave. There's a lot here. It is not always clear why it is needed, but it exists and, perhaps, inspires.

In construction and the production of modifications, any kind of junk can be used. And the best thing is that all the garbage can be unloaded from the backpack with one button. The Plyushkins are happy.

Against the backdrop of a polished open production “ The Witcher 3"or glamorous epic Dragon Age: Inquisition this Fallout feels old-fashioned and downright awkward in places - it's a world where you're just given the boot and told, "You live here now." Fallout 4 seems to have a hard time deciding what is really important to it, and therefore is trying to simply portray everything: a linear action game, a role-playing sandbox, a life simulator, and construction like in Rust or Minecraft. In the end, it turned out that the game has enough flaws, but in terms of completeness of coverage, few can compare with it. No matter who you are, you will eventually find something in it.
