Repair of window fittings for plastic windows

Having been repairing plastic window fittings since 2002, we have accumulated knowledge about the probable cause of its failure, depending on the brand.

It is no secret that development engineers make mistakes in their calculations regarding service life or the amount of permissible load. And quite a lot of time passes to correct errors and increase the reliability of parts. Therefore, manufacturers replace the manufactured accessories with new ones. This was the case, for example, with the main locks “WinkHaus”, where the gearbox of the main lock often broke.

The transition to new automatic equipment for assembling PVC windows at the beginning of 2000 caused the replacement of the old unreliable RotoCentro fittings with the new Roto-NT. Moreover, the upper hinge group, corner switches, middle and main locks have become of different sizes, similarly, changes in the size of parts have occurred in such brands as:

  • "Aubi"
  • "Aubi"
  • "Sigenia"
  • "Schuco"
  • "Wink House"
  • "MACO"

A number of brands, such as: “Pimas”, “AGB”, “SELVE”, “AUBI 300”, “PKD”, “Romb”, “SCHÜRING”, are either no longer produced or are not supplied to the Russian market. Therefore, if one of the plastic window fittings fails, you have to replace the entire set, which is not cheap and only professional craftsmen can perform this operation.

Do-it-yourself repair of plastic window fittings.

The search engine contains many pages on how to do DIY repairs. That parts are sold on any construction markets. But reading them, you will not find real information on replacing mechanisms, and only a few companies in the city sell the necessary accessories, and it is almost impossible for a private person to buy them at retail without knowing the required article numbers.

Regardless of wasting time on determining the brand of accessories, its article number in the catalog, or a trip to the Moscow region to the supplier’s warehouse, contact our service center. Our technician, having arrived at the scene of the breakdown, can install a temporary lock so that the window is locked, then we will purchase, if possible, the necessary element, or we will offer you the choice of replacing the old window fittings with new ones of excellent quality “Roto” or “Sigenia”.

Short deadlines, high quality workmanship and low prices distinguish our service center from competitors. Our prices for repairing plastic window fittings correspond to those stated in the price list on the website.

Despite all the reliability of plastic windows, they periodically require preventive maintenance and sometimes repairs. Many jobs can be done with your own hands at home. To do this, you need to understand the principle of operation of the mechanisms, as well as prepare the necessary tools. In this review, we will talk about the most common problems with window frame designs and how to eliminate them.

Many repairs can be done at home

What tools will you need to repair plastic windows yourself at home?

You must first prepare a minimum set of tools:

  • screwdrivers with different tips;
  • 4 mm hex key. It comes in every cyclist's kit;
  • WD-40.

Adjusting the PVC window sash when sagging

Sometimes when closing a window, the sash doesn’t fit well into place. Most likely, the movable part of the window structure has sagged, and it is required.

Horizontally

To adjust the lower part of the movable PVC sash, you must perform the following steps with the lower hinge.

  1. Open the window.
  2. Remove the trim.
  3. Install the key into the groove located at the bottom.
  4. If it is necessary to move the moving part of the window to the left, the hexagon is turned clockwise, and, conversely, when rotated counterclockwise, the sash moves to the right.

For the upper part, all manipulations are performed with a loop located in the upper part.

Vertically

To adjust the moving part of the structure vertically, the algorithm of actions is as follows.

  1. Open the door.
  2. Remove the PVC trim from the bottom hinge.
  3. Insert the key into the groove located higher and adjust the lift of the sash: clockwise - the window will rise, counter-clockwise - the window will lower.

What to do when blowing

If you feel that the sashes are not pressed tightly and there is a draft coming from the window, you can check this with a candle, lighter or match, passing them around the perimeter of the frame. In any place where the light deviates, it means that repairs are required there, which you can do yourself.

Adjusting the clamping unit

First of all, to eliminate blowing, you can adjust the clamping unit. There are two options here.

  1. The key is to change the position of all the eccentrics that are located at the ends of the movable structures. They only need to be rotated a few millimeters.
  2. If it is impossible to turn the eccentrics, then you first need to slightly loosen the fasteners of the strike plate and move the assembly slightly.

All methods of adjusting hinge pressure

If blowing in the swing-out flap is felt from the hinge side, you must first remove the trim. Next, you should look at the shape of the adjusting screw located below. Then you need to pick up a screwdriver and, holding the sash from below with one hand, adjust the tightening mechanism to the right or left.

A video about pressing the hinges in case of inflation can be seen in the video:

If the moving part of the window is only rotating, there may be no pressing fittings installed on it on the hinge side. In this case, you should secure it with your own hands. Manufacturers produce two types of fasteners:

  • external clamping devices that are installed on the outside of the swing sash;
  • internal, they are installed from the inside of the sash.

It is first necessary to determine exactly at which points of the window structure it blows and mark these places. Further, all work is performed in the following order.

IllustrationDescription of action
Remove the lining from the hinges, move the pin, and remove the sash from the hinges.
Install the outer clamp on the sash, the edge should not overlap the elastic band.
The internal clamp consists of two parts. First, use self-tapping screws to secure the clamp to the inside of the sash.
Place the window in place and secure the outer clamp to the screws.
Cover the outer clamp with a decorative cover.
Open the sash, mark the installation location of the counter part from the inside and secure it with self-tapping screws.

There is a misalignment in the profile - the straightening plates need to be replaced

Another big problem that often occurs in everyday life is sash misalignment. There are quite a few reasons for this, for example, poor-quality installation, when the window frame could be stretched by anchors, which is why the clamping units simply did not function. The second option: the straightening partitions were simply not installed in production or they fell. If the design is under warranty, it is better to entrust the repair to specialists.

If the service is not possible to restore the geometry by replacing the straightening plates, the algorithm of actions is as follows.

IllustrationDescription of action
With the window closed, draw a line at the top and bottom of the sash.
Having opened the frame, measure the distance to the line. According to standards, it should be no more than 8 mm on each side.
Remove all beads from the sash, starting with the vertical one, then from the adjacent corner.
Remove the glass unit from the frame.
Place bridges of the required size at a distance of no more than 5 cm from the corner. Technology requires this. Then insert the glass unit into place.
Using a plastic spatula, slightly pushing the glass unit, install bridges of the required size in all corners.
Hammer the glazing beads in the reverse order until you hear a characteristic click and check the tilt-and-turn mechanism.

How to clean and adjust fittings when clogged

PVC window fittings require careful treatment; they can be called the “muscle” of the system. During operation, street and household dust gets into it. If repair work has been carried out on the house, its consequences pose a serious danger to the functioning of the entire structure.

Advice! Manufacturers recommend cleaning and lubricating the fittings and moving mechanisms of a plastic window twice a year: in spring and autumn, as well as after repair work. This will ensure the product a long and impeccable service life.

The sequence of cleaning work is as follows.

  1. Remove the movable frame from its hinges.
  2. It is most convenient to start cleaning with a vacuum cleaner, this will prevent dirt from getting even deeper into the grooves.
  3. After mechanical cleaning with a vacuum cleaner, it is necessary to remove any remaining dirt and dust with soft cloths.
  4. Pour lubricant into the fittings. A special product should be used.
  5. Place the sash in place.

Replacing the rubber seal yourself

The service life of the rubber seal is 5-10 years. Its wear is easily determined visually. When purchasing a new element, it is advisable to give preference to German manufacturers; the quality of their products is always at their best. In addition, the rubber band will have to be replaced both on the frame side and on the sash.

The work algorithm is as follows.

IllustrationDescription of action
Remove the sash, unfasten the scissors and remove the seal, starting from the top.
Insert the sash seal into the groove of the profile with the protruding “leg”. You can't pull it. Installation always starts from the middle of the top. When joining, coat the edges with glue.
Replace the scissors.
The seal is removed from the frame from the corner.
Insert the seal into the grooves. In this case, the thick side should be directed towards the edge of the frame. Glue the edges of the elastic and put the frame in place.

The entire algorithm is presented in more detail in the video:

What to do when the PVC window handle is faulty

Another weak link in the structures is the handle. If it malfunctions, it will become impossible to open or close the moving part. The most common problems encountered are:

  • fasteners have become loose;
  • the handle does not turn well;
  • the unit is jammed.

Let's take a closer look at troubleshooting each problem.

The handle is loose

If the handle becomes loose, this means that the fasteners have become loose and the mechanism may fail. To work you will need a screwdriver and 2-3 minutes of time.

  1. Pull the cover towards you and move it to the side.
  2. Tighten any loose screws.
  3. Put the cover in place.

Problems turning the handle

If the handle is difficult to turn, there may be several reasons for this:

  • The lubricant inside the mechanism has dried out. This problem is easily solved. It is enough to apply lubricant to all moving parts of the handle and pour it into the holes. Then you need to turn the handle several times so that the composition is distributed over all nodes;
  • clogged fittings, to do this you will need to disassemble the handle and clean it. If you can’t turn to specialists, you’ll have to act on your own. First of all, you need to photograph the mechanism. This will make it easier to determine the order of its assembly. Then, take everything apart, clean and lubricate. After this, reassemble the handle;
  • the mechanism has failed. To fix this problem, you will need to find a suitable mechanism and replace it yourself.

Jamming occurred

If the handle is stuck in the “open” or “closed” position, it means that the lock has been activated. It is installed in the mechanism in order to protect the structure from sudden breakdown, and, unfortunately, sometimes it works spontaneously and always at the wrong time.

In the open or closed position of the movable structure

You can correct this situation with your own hands. The procedure depends on the brand of accessories:

  • for “AUBI” fittings, the algorithm of actions is as follows: put the sash in a vertical position, find a plate with a spring on the end side at the level of the handle, press it against the rubber seal, then turn the handle;
  • On the handles of other manufacturers, find a locking tongue on the end side. It is located at an angle relative to the opening window. To unlock, you need to turn it over to a vertical position, then you can turn the handle;
  • If the lock breaks or slips, to adjust it, you need to open the window slightly, unscrew the response mechanism, place any plastic pad under it and tighten it.

Another option for unlocking a window can be seen in the video:

In reclining position

If the handle is stuck in the ventilation mode position, most likely the element called the scissors has broken. The action algorithm is as follows.

  1. Remove the movable sash from its hinges.
  2. Install the upper scissor assembly into the prepared grooves.
  3. Turn the handle slightly to the side. Press the lock if the handle does not turn.
  4. Check the correct functioning of the locking unit.
  5. Reinstall the window.

If adjustment does not help, you need to lubricate the moving parts of the scissors with a special compound, such as WD-40.

What to do if the movable structure opens in two positions simultaneously

This can happen when the user starts to turn the handle while the window is open, and the lock will activate. The algorithm of actions is as follows.

  1. Turn the handle up.
  2. Carefully, without additional effort, press the movable window structure from above to the frame.
  3. Holding the movable sash with your hand, lightly press the lock bar. At this time, the handle should be turned to the opening mode parallel to the window sill.
  4. Check the functionality of the handle in different modes.

How to replace a PVC window handle

If the handle breaks or none of the adjustment options helps, there is only one way out - install another one. When choosing new fittings, pay attention to the following factors:

  • quality of the handle;
  • shape and color, which should be in harmony with the overall interior;
  • handles with a lock have appeared on sale - this is excellent protection against children, the mechanism will protect the window from unauthorized opening.

Let's look at the entire procedure for replacing the handle in more detail.

IllustrationDescription of action
Turn the handle parallel to the window sill.
Move the decorative trim aside and unscrew the screws.
Remove the handle from the plastic window.
Take the whole pen. Holding it by the body with one hand, turn it at an angle of 90º with the other.
Bend the cover and turn it perpendicularly.
Insert the handle into the holes. It should fit exactly into the groove and fasten with screws.
Turn the decorative trim to a vertical position.

You can watch the entire process in more detail in the video:

Advice! If the decorative trim is closed, it cannot be moved to the side. There is a recess in the lower part into which you can insert a flat-head screwdriver or a file and pry it slightly. The bar will move away from the knot.

Damaged double-glazed windows - no problem, step-by-step guide to action

In more complex cases, a complete replacement of the double-glazed window or glass will be required. It is advisable to invite professional specialists for such work. If desired, all manipulations can be performed at home yourself.

Complete glass replacement

A double-glazed window is a sealed structure that consists of several sheets of glass. Sometimes there is a need to replace it. This may happen in the following cases:

  • glass is broken or cracked, respectively, depressurization of one chamber has occurred;
  • condensation appears on glass surfaces, and the desiccant rolls down in the form of yellow resin;
  • street noise can be heard in the room, it became necessary to install a noise-absorbing double-glazed window;
  • drafts have appeared that are not regulated by any of the above methods. Accordingly, heat is not retained in the room;
  • the structure has lost its tightness, or it is necessary to install a double-glazed window with a large number of chambers.

To replace a double-glazed window, you must perform the following manipulations.

  1. Determine the marking of the glass unit, which is printed on the aluminum frame, and order a similar one from the manufacturer.
  2. First, remove the bead from the vertical side of the glass unit, then the closest one from the free corner. After dismantling all beads, remove the glass unit. It is advisable to use a spatula and mallet when working.
  3. Install a new double-glazed window, having previously laid the straightening plates.
  4. Secure the beads until you hear a characteristic click.

How to replace glass in a double-glazed window with your own hands

Replacing glass in a double-glazed window requires certain knowledge and skills. Let's look at the whole process in more detail.

IllustrationDescription of action
Remove the beads around the perimeter of the glass unit.
Remove the glass unit and place it on a horizontal surface with the broken glass facing up. Using a utility knife, cut through the sealant around the perimeter to the spacer frame.
Remove the broken glass from the glass unit.
Cut off the sealant layer at a slight angle, wipe the new glass with a cleaning agent, remove all dirt and place the washed side inward on the glass unit.
Thoroughly treat all connections with plumbing grade silicone. Acrylic sealant cannot be used in this case. Wait until it dries completely, cover the edges of the structure with tape, insert it into the frame, and install glazing beads.

You can watch the entire process in more detail in the video:

Conclusion

As you can see, there is nothing complicated in repairing plastic windows; the main thing is to know what it consists of, and also to have simple tools on hand. We hope that with the help of our recommendations you will be able to fix all minor problems with your own hands at home.

If you have any questions, ask them in the comments. Our experts will be happy to answer them.

Windows with handles that do not work well, preventing the window from being closed or opened, may be clogged with dust, have hidden defects, or fail altogether. To get rid of this trouble, it is not necessary to change the entire window system; it is much easier (and cheaper) to repair the fittings. This is not as difficult to do as it might seem at first glance; sometimes, it will be enough to simply disassemble the entire mechanism, carefully treat it with lubricant and reassemble it. Sometimes, repairs will be a little more labor intensive. We will consider the most common problems with window fittings and examples of their elimination below.

What are plastic window fittings?

Replacing fittings is a problem that every person whose apartment or house has PVC or aluminum structures may face. Such elements can be rotary or tilt-and-turn; they are located on windows and balcony doors.

These products allow you to:

  • open the window, door (rotary position);
  • tilt for ventilation (reclining position);
  • close the sash, for which the resistance of the seal located inside is overcome.

Accessories for plastic structures are divided into categories:

  • for swing-type sashes (doors);
  • for swing-and-turn sashes (doors);
  • for flaps (doors) of a folding, transom type.

Today, the leaders in this market are manufacturers from Germany - Roto and Austria - MACO. Both companies are distinguished by the reliability of fastening elements and high quality materials, which is why they are chosen by most companies producing window systems.

Roto fittings

German models from Roto (roto) have a fairly wide model line:

  • Roto NT: the most popular tilt and turn model. It is equipped with the highest possible anti-corrosion protection; directly under the paint layer there is a galvanic coating that acts as a base;
  • Roto NX: elements characterized by increased wear resistance, created specifically for equipping buildings and structures for industrial purposes;
  • Roto OK: this is the standard equipment for a tilt-and-turn system, created for standard door and window units of residential buildings;
  • Roto NT Designo: has hinges hidden from prying eyes, with high strength and strength, therefore used to equip heavy or large-volume sashes and doors.

An important advantage of Roto products is the mandatory application of a special coating, the name of which has the prefix nano. It increases the anti-corrosion properties of the elements without changing the appearance at all, maintaining a matte shine and smoothness of the outer surface.

Installation of Roto fittings

German quality Roto is a modular type of connection. Broken elements that are out of order and cannot cope with the duties assigned to them can be easily removed and replaced with new ones.

The modules are connected to each other using a special method (patented) called Clip&Fit. The mechanisms are attached using screws.

MACO fittings

High quality and a fairly wide range have allowed Austrian fittings called MACO to gain recognition from buyers. It is used to equip doors, PVC windows, metal type.

An important feature of models from this manufacturer is the presence of anti-burglary and electronic mechanisms that are equipped with doors or windows, increasing the security of the room.

Moreover, replacing conventional locking bars with burglar-resistant ones will not be difficult not only for a professional, but also for an ordinary person who has the slightest skill in working with tools. Products from MACO, regardless of their shape or complexity of execution, have a single method of connection and installation.

The mechanisms of this manufacturer are also protected against corrosion by applying a coating called Silber-look.

Fittings for plastic windows and doors from the developer (in new houses)

Repairing window components is a problem that is increasingly puzzling even the owners of new, newly constructed buildings. Thrifty and unscrupulous developers do their best to reduce the cost of the work they are required to do. Therefore, plastic structures in new houses are rarely of high quality; most often, developers work with manufacturers who offer the cheapest window systems, as well as elements that are not reliable.

Installing new plastic systems, of course, can solve the problem once and for all, however, it is not always affordable for new residents. But living with handles that do not perform their tasks well, with seals crawling out of the cracks and preventing the window from being closed, is no good.

The solution to the problem will be:

  • complete replacement of the seal, if required;
  • repair or replacement of fittings.

The fittings of the plastic window (door) are broken. What to do?

If a problem arises such as a slight breakdown of the element that opens and closes the sashes, the solution would be to replace one of them (the one that failed). Manufacturers of these elements specifically create a modular fittings system, so replacing one of the components is usually not difficult.

When one block breaks, it is replaced with a new one, which restores the functionality of the entire structure. Only serious damage requires replacement of all fittings.

Not in all cases, replacement should be done with your own hands; some breakdowns can only be repaired by service specialists, whose contact should not be neglected.

Why do the fittings of plastic windows and doors break?

Replacing fittings may be necessary for a number of reasons:

  • refusal to carry out maintenance of the window system on a regular basis;
  • fatigue of the material, its increased wear;
  • excess effort applied to opening/closing windows;
  • foreign objects entering window sashes and operating elements, which interferes with their adequate functioning.

Main malfunctions in the operation of plastic window (door) fittings

Repairing plastic window fittings can be carried out in different ways; specific techniques depend on the reason that caused the equipment malfunction.

How can I determine what kind of fittings I have installed?

Repair of plastic window fittings must begin with identifying its manufacturer. This is not difficult to do: on each module you can find a sticker that is the manufacturer’s logo. You need to open the transom of a window or door; at the end, near the handle, you can find an emblem indicating the name of the company.

Do-it-yourself replacement of plastic window fittings

Repairing plastic windows most often requires replacing metal fittings; is it possible to cope with this problem yourself, without turning to window production specialists? If you approach the matter wisely and familiarize yourself with the basics of the repair process on numerous videos presented on the Internet, you can do everything yourself.

Important! If there is the slightest doubt about the correctness of the work performed, it is better to refuse such repairs and entrust it to qualified professionals.

Before starting repair work, you should remember three simple rules that are constantly indicated by manufacturers in recommendations for the use of PVC windows and related devices.

Important rules:

  1. It is strictly prohibited to use a structure with broken metal fittings.
  2. All components that are damaged must be replaced immediately.
  3. Work on adjusting and replacing window system fixtures should, if possible, be trusted only to specialists.

Do-it-yourself repair of the plastic window mechanism

Repair of plastic windows may not be necessary if the structures are made by a trusted manufacturer, observing the basic technological aspects, using high-quality materials. Such systems serve for a long time, causing virtually no complaints, without becoming a source of problems and without requiring the replacement of any elements.

Situations when the window starts to blow, the handle or opening device breaks, the seal dries out and breaks, most often arise when the window systems installed in the house were produced without taking into account all the rules and subtleties. This situation requires repair work.

Most often, the following problems arise with mechanisms:

  • the handle becomes too loose, more often due to the application of great force to open/close it, or sudden movements;
  • the handle fails when a complete replacement of this component is required;
  • the movement of the opening device becomes tight, which may indicate sagging of the sash, or prolonged operation of the window without lubrication of the moving components;
  • the seal deteriorates;
  • the devices included in the lock are damaged;
  • the handle refuses to function (does not close the window), which may be caused by incorrect operation of the system elements;
  • the glass unit or frame is damaged, which requires mandatory replacement of the damaged structure.

Despite the fact that the repair of window systems should be carried out by qualified specialists, this task can be completed by an ordinary person if you approach it wisely and take into account all the necessary nuances.

Tools required for repairs

Repairing plastic windows may require certain tools:

  • key with six edges measuring 4 mm;
  • a star-shaped screwdriver and attachments for it (needed only for setting up rare types of mechanisms, however, they should be prepared in advance);
  • a simple Phillips screwdriver, size 3, 4;
  • pliers;
  • machine oil (WD-40 lubricant aerosol).

A furniture key, also known as a hex key, is the most necessary for installing and replacing window elements; it can have the shape of the letter “L” or “S” (with the possibility of double-sided action). Window installation specialists use keys that have a bend in the upper part to perform their work; they facilitate the process of performing certain manipulations. In the absence of a special tool, you can adapt any other wrenches and attachments to your needs.

To increase the convenience of fixing metal fittings to profiles, it is important to have a Phillips screwdriver on hand to correctly attach special bolts. Such a tool will definitely come in handy in the process of replacing and adjusting handles.

When a plastic window has a sliding device, its repair requires special skills. But, as a rule, the whole problem lies only in setting the optimal distance between the roller carriages holding the movable sash.

Main window adjustment points

Before starting work directly, consider the points to be adjusted:

  • upper horizontal hinges: for adjusting the upper part of the sashes;
  • lower horizontal hinges: to normalize the lower angle of the valves;
  • bottom hinge: allows you to adjust the vertical position of the sashes;
  • eccentric locking pin (lower or upper): regulates the clamping force of the sashes.

Each of these points allows you to find and solve any problem. If particles of debris are found, they should be removed and then re-adjusted.

Troubleshooting handle problems

Repair of fittings is most often associated with adjusting the operation of handles. As a rule, the only thing you need to do to get the device working is to tighten the mount.

Under each handle there is a rectangular overlay located vertically upward. You need to pry it with your finger at the top and bottom edges, which will allow you to rotate the element 90 degrees. Under this design there will be 2 bolts with heads for a Phillips screwdriver hidden; they need to be tightened using the appropriate tool.

Do not pry off the plate covering the bolts with a screwdriver or other sharp object; this may cause damage to the integrity of the profile and deformation of the end part of the plug.

Setting the clamping mechanism

Repair of plastic window fittings very often has to begin when the rubber seal fails. This happens when it is made of low-quality materials, under the influence of precipitation, friction and constant use.

Due to the wear of the seal, cracks may appear, which leads to a complete loss of tightness, air penetration, and deterioration of sound insulation properties.

To eliminate this pathology, it is not necessary to resort to complete replacement of the seal; the fittings allow you to get rid of the problem by bringing the clamping mechanism back to normal.

The clamping force requires regular (2 times a year) changes; this is necessary when the air temperature changes from low to high and vice versa. In addition, reducing the voltage allows you to increase the service life of the rubber seal.

To adjust the force, you should find eccentrics - these are special oval-shaped cylinders located on the end side of the sash, in the slots of the metal plugs. There are counter hooks on the frame, into which other hooks enter when the handle is turned, when the door is pressed against the frame. The force can be adjusted by moving the hooks.

To weaken the force of closing the door, turn the protruding part of the eccentric towards the street; to strengthen it, turn it inside the room.

To set up eccentrics and counter hooks, you can use one of the tips (which one is best depends on the hardware manufacturer):

  1. Turn the eccentric slot using a flat-head screwdriver.
  2. Pull back with your hand using pliers, then twist.
  3. Apply force by acting on the eccentrics with pliers.

Important! Before choosing a method of influence, it is very important to study the recommendations for a specific model of the system; sometimes turning the mechanism with pliers can lead to damage to the entire fastening mechanism.

When adjustment using external cylinders does not produce results, you can try to influence the position of the mating parts by changing their position.

The setup is done like this:

  • Using a hex wrench, remove the two bolts that secure the mating part;
  • move the hook towards the room (this will reduce the pressure), towards the street (this will increase the pressure).

When the pressure on the handle is changed, you need to adjust the side where the canopies are located. If we are talking about a door equipped with a transom system, with the ability to open the window for ventilation, you need:

  • on the lower canopy, find the cap of the plastic trim and remove it;
  • there will be two obvious and one hidden bolts located on the canopy; after closing the door, you need to use a hex key to remove the bolt located perpendicular to the plane. It should be twisted counterclockwise (to strengthen) and vice versa;
  • To adjust the upper part, you should open the sash, press the locking lever or clip on the side of the handle (this will set the sash to ventilation mode). In this case, the sash will come out of the upper groove and will remain hanging only on the lower element, which will open access to the head for adjusting the pressure of the upper part of the sash. It can be adjusted by turning the bolt, just like when adjusting the trunnions.

Solving other problems

Repair of plastic windows may be required if the handle is jammed. The reason for this situation may be incorrect operation of the blocking device, when the position of the open window does not change to the closed position.

To solve the problem you need to do the following:

  • find the locking lever: it can be located at the end of the window (when the sash is open, it is located at an angle to the seal), at the end of the sash (from the handle side), protruding in the form of a clip that goes behind the rubber seal;
  • move the lever to the side;
  • release the movement of the handle mechanism.

Window systems, as well as the fittings that support their operation, should be maintained on a regular basis.

Methods for caring for mechanisms:

  • regulate (twice a year);
  • clean with a soft cloth soaked in a soap solution to remove accumulated dust and dirt;
  • lubricate with oil for processing sewing machine parts (without additives).

Important! The manufacturer of window structures sometimes includes in the warranty card a condition on mandatory periodic servicing of the fittings. Failure to comply with this clause may result in cancellation of the warranty.

In order for the mechanisms to serve for a long time, it is necessary to follow the recommendations for caring for them:

  • after completing the repair work, it is necessary to remove traces of dust from the metal using a soap solution;
  • protect elements from contact with sharp objects, as well as prolonged contact with water, which can cause corrosion;
  • Do not rub the surface of the plastic with a hard sponge, use a soft cloth for cleaning;
  • Do not use compounds containing abrasive, aggressive, chemical substances (chlorine, alcohol, acids).

It is very important not to forget about cleaning glass surfaces: you need to work carefully, preventing moisture from penetrating the profile, as well as the rubber seal (especially if a solution containing alcohol is used for cleaning).

The seal should be cleaned no more often, but no less than once every 6 months. For this purpose, use a solution of water and soap, then treat with silicone-based lubricant.

Each frame contains drainage holes that also need to be cleaned. They are located on the bottom plane of the frame.

Regular maintenance of the window structure, maintaining the fittings in working order, timely correction of defects and breakdowns will preserve the beauty of the windows for a long time.

When window fittings fail or are completely broken, they will need to be replaced. It is almost impossible to carry out such work on your own. The hardware replacement service is not the cheapest. Since it includes the visit of a specialist, the fittings themselves and work on replacing them.

Now there is a large selection of accessories, which vary in price and quality. Fittings of one type can be installed on any plastic profile. Therefore, sometimes people who have installed inexpensive windows, for example, REHAU, are surprised that it broke. But it all depends on the window assembly plant. As a rule, factories that use well-known brands of profiles also install branded fittings on them. Of course, expensive accessories can break.

Window fittings

There are three types of opening: rotary system, tilt-and-turn and tilting (transom). The first is a more budget-friendly and simpler option (installation and use), as it consists of two/three parts; the second system is more complex and consists, in some cases, of as many as 10 components. The third is used in transom windows (for example, on the ground floor).

Window handle scrolls

The first indicator that the fittings of a plastic window cannot be repaired is the scrolling handle.

When the window handle rotates around its axis, this is an indication that the fittings are broken. The gearbox, which drives the entire mechanism, fell apart. This can happen due to service life or heavy load on the fittings themselves. This can happen due to:

  • The sash is not adjusted correctly.
  • Lots of clamping parts.
  • The sash has sagged.
  • The lock was not lubricated in a timely manner.
  • Ingress of construction waste.

In such cases, the mechanism jams and the load is transferred to the gearbox. The force of closing the handle breaks the gearbox. Since it is riveted, it cannot be repaired.

Replacing hinges on PVC windows

Very often, PVC windows break off their hinges. Reasons for this:

  • Large sash weight (wide sash).
  • Incorrect opening/closing of the door.
  • Late maintenance of fittings.

  • This problem occurs most often on plastic doors. Very important! If the windows are more than 5 years old, then they definitely have an old-style mechanism installed. Parts for them are almost impossible to find. And in this case, you will have to completely change the entire window trim.

    Window opening mechanisms are very reliable; with proper care, they can last 20-25 years.

    The window can be upgraded for ease of use by adding to the design:

    • Opening limiter.
    • Balcony door latch (opening latch).
    • Child lock (opening limiter).
    • Anti-burglary mechanisms.
