How to repair doors

You can easily handle hanging even the heaviest door if you shorten the top or bottom hinge pin a little.

How to repair doors

If the hinges are not strictly vertical, then your door will open or close by itself. The door swinging open means it is tilted away from the door frame. A piece of plywood or cardboard that needs to be placed under any half of the top hinge will help you eliminate this defect.

If the door closes spontaneously, it is tilted towards the door frame. To return the door to a vertical position, a piece of plywood or cardboard is placed under half of the bottom hinge.

If the door hinges are in perfect order, but the door has settled and clings to the floor or threshold, try placing washers or homemade rings made of thick, strong wire between the upper and lower halves of the hinges, not forgetting to lubricate them with machine oil.

Hanging even a very heavy door is not difficult if you slightly shorten the upper or lower pin of the hinge. If the hinges are not strictly vertical, the door will close/open on its own. You can get rid of the defect by placing a piece of cardboard under either half of the top loop.

In order for the door to close as tightly as possible and not open from the wind, you need to nail a rubber tube of the required diameter to the jamb, which will hold our door.

To prevent wind from blowing from under the door, nail thick foam rubber to the bottom end or close the gap between the jamb and the door using plastic film secured with simple buttons.

If the door begins to jam, then most likely the hinges on it have become loose. You just need to replace the old screws with longer ones. To get rid of the squeak, just lubricate the hinges with ordinary machine oil or the lead of a simple pencil, after lifting the door on its hinges.

The door opens by itself: what to do

Sometimes the door opens on its own. What to do in such a situation? Spontaneous opening of the door is most often associated with poor installation of the door frame. This interior door begins to hit the wall and may hit the stopper. The result is rapid wear. This may be a sign of sagging interior door, and such a deficiency can be corrected.

The main reason for breakage and misalignment of doors is broken or incorrectly installed hinges.

First of all, the hinges may be the reason for the opening. Poor installation of the hinges causes distortions and the door begins to open with difficulty.

One reason may be that one half of the loop is loose. If the box is installed level, the hinges have been marked, but the canvas still deviates from the vertical, it means that defective hinges were installed. They need to be replaced.

Another reason could be poorly made grooves for the hinges. For example, one edge...

A door that closes itself

The idea is simple. No hinges, no springs, and no fancy devices at all (Fig. I). When opening, the door rises by 5-6 mm. since a roller is mounted on its canvas, which rolls up an inclined surface. The door closes due to its weight. The upper assembly is a simple kingpin. All this applies only to doors that swing open and “toward” “away”. And for ordinary ones, mounted on removable hinges, you need to install a glass with an inclined upper edge - a roller attached to the door leaf also rolls along it. To keep the door closed tightly

In Fig. Figure 2 shows one of the options for fastening a leaf spring on a stationary part of the door with two screws 1 and 2. The third screw is an adjusting screw. Its position is located with a screwdriver through hole 3. The spring is best made from sheet, heat-treated steel or from phosphor bronze with a thickness of 0.5 to 1 mm, can also be made of solid duralumin. A spring made from an ornamental...

The main and perhaps the only problem that a plastic door may force you to face is adjusting the hinges. As a rule, high-quality modern plastic structures, when used correctly, do not require any more hassle. But adjustment also causes difficulties for many people.

Entrance plastic door

When installing a new plastic door, installers must immediately adjust it to the location, and for some time its operation does not cause any complaints. But under the influence of its own weight, the door may sag and stop closing well.

How to adjust the plastic doors in this case or if other malfunctions occur (see Adjusting the balcony door)? How to prevent some problems from occurring? Finally, how do you know when a plastic door needs adjustment? We will try to answer these questions.

The doors close on their own.

Text: Nikita Sidorov

Hello, Nikita. I have several interior doors in my apartment that just drive me crazy. The doors don't stay in place. When you open the door completely and leave, it slowly closes itself. The other door slowly opens on its own when I need it to be closed. For example, when I turn on the heater. I don't want to put anything under the door. And it's not a draft - it happens when all the windows are completely closed. They tried to adjust the hinges several times - to no avail. In general, is it realistic to ensure that the door stays where I need it or is this a fantasy? Oksana.

Hello, Oksana. Doors that close and open themselves are a problem that occurs in almost all houses and apartments. Moreover, heavy doors are usually more likely to begin to lead an independent life, because the weight of the door has a lot of potential energy, which makes itself felt even if the door deviates a little...

How to prevent a door from opening on its own

Sometimes a problem arises when the door opens on its own either because of a blow of wind or because someone has passed next to it. One way or another, you have to get up and close it again. If this happens several times a day, and even at the most inopportune moments, then by the evening it begins to irritate greatly, ruin your nerves, or even enrage you! And in the end you have to pull yourself together and come up with a solution to this problem.

You can, of course, reinvent the wheel, but why waste time thinking about it when smart people have already worked out and decided everything a long time ago. In entrances, for example, springs are installed that hold the door under tension and give it the desired position when it changes. But I think the spring will not suit us, since we, after all, do not live in the entrance. An electromagnetic lock consumes too much electricity and is not suitable for us either.

In some cases, owners of metal-plastic balconies encounter difficulties, namely, the balcony door does not close. This is usually associated with a gradual sagging of door hinges under the weight of the door leaf, as well as with disruptions in the operation of the fittings (the mechanism that ensures the opening and locking of the door).

In this article we will tell you how to set up a balcony door yourself, without resorting to the services of installation specialists. This will help you solve the problem as quickly as possible, while significantly saving money on maintenance.

Why won't the door close?

Door that won't close on the balcony

If the plastic balcony door does not close, this means that it is time to start adjusting it. This may be caused by malfunctions in the fittings, a change in the shape of the door leaf (for example, under the influence of temperature) or, as we mentioned above, sagging of the door leaf on the hinges.

We sometimes hear various complaints from the population about plastic windows. Either the plastic window does not close, then it fogs up, or the handle has fallen off... There are many nuances in the operation of plastic windows. What to do? The main thing is not to panic. The problem of closing a window, like any other, needs to be approached thoroughly and competently, so as not to cause even more harm.

The plastic window does not close tightly

The problem is purely technical in nature: the fittings become loose over time and allow tricks of this kind to occur. It can be solved by a specialist installing plastic windows by simply adjusting the window fittings.

The plastic window does not close at all - what to do?

It often happens that for some reason the window immediately opens in two positions - full opening and ventilation. Unfortunately, few people know what to do in such a situation. Well, if this happened in the summer, you can wait for the master. What if it’s winter? Attempts to return everything to its place...

Making a vegetable garden

Any plot of land sooner or later has to be fenced, as this eliminates many everyday problems, for example, from neighboring goats visiting the plot. However, having solved some problems with the help of a fence, you will have to face others. So, you decided to bring a container of water to the site for irrigation, then suddenly the opportunity arose to dig up the garden with a tractor. For these purposes, it would be necessary to provide a very wide gate, but often circumstances do not allow this. In addition, the gates themselves are very expensive, and the need for them arises once or twice a year, no more. What should I do?

Rice. 1. Sequence of installation of a chain-link fence

It turns out that this problem is very easy to solve without much expense, especially if you fence your area with a chain-link mesh. In this case, that is, when installing a fence, I advise you to do the following:

Do not dig one support (the third) into the ground, and if it is already standing...

The refrigerator door does not close: why and what to do?

The refrigerator is designed to last a long time, but like other appliances, it sometimes becomes inoperative. And it would seem like a small breakdown - an open sash - could turn into a problem for this household unit. Air entering the chamber not only affects the safety of products, but can also harm equipment. When the door is open, the refrigerator will remain in working condition all the time until the appliance motor overheats.

Refrigerator door repair

A refrigerator door that won't close is a real disaster, plus spoiled food. Before establishing the cause of a faulty mechanism, you need to find out the nature of the fault and see why your freezer is not covered for a fee.

Before you worry, be sure to look: maybe something is preventing the refrigerator from closing the door: some kind of jar, frying pan. Try to push the items deeper and check again...

During operation, completely serviceable refrigerators may have problems closing the door. The most common causes of this problem are:
- the door seal is damaged;
- the door sagged under its own weight;
- for modern models - the door open alarm may not work or work for no reason - this indicates a malfunction of the door open sensor.

Each of these malfunctions requires taking certain measures. Door breakdowns can be caused by various reasons, but the solutions are approximately the same. The door may need to be removed, repositioned, adjusted, or completely replaced; replacing a magnetic lock or door sensor; replacing rubber or other parts of the refrigerator door; eliminating the formation of condensation on the door - due to the fact that it cannot close tightly.

Interior doors often lose their appearance during use and receive minor damage. You can, of course, replace them with new ones over time, but why spend money if you can simply repair them. Provided, of course, that the canvas has not turned into trash. Most of the defects that appear can be eliminated with your own hands and extend the life of the door structure for a long time.

Minor, minor damage to the door can be easily repaired yourself, without resorting to the services of specialists. For example, to get rid of small scratches or cracks, you must first putty the damaged area and then sand it.

The technology for doing this work is as follows:

  1. First, you need to remove a layer of paint or other decorative coating, and then clean the surface of dirt and dust.
  2. After this, the gap is filled with a putty solution, which consists of sawdust and an adhesive composition.
  3. After the putty has dried, the area must be cleaned with sandpaper.

If the damage is very small, for reliable adhesion of the putty and wood, it is better to expand the problem area a little in size. But if there are very deep cracks on the door, sawdust, which fills the gap, and subsequent varnishing will help solve the problem.

If the door is warped, the reasons for this phenomenon may be:

  1. If any screw or screw falls out, you need to carefully inspect all the fasteners and, if necessary, install new ones.
  2. Incorrectly selected grooves for hinges - here you will have to rehang the door.
  3. The recesses are too shallow for awnings - in this case they need to be made deeper.
  4. The recesses for the awnings are too deep - the situation will be corrected by placing an object under the hinges.

The resulting gap between the frame and the leaf may be caused by improper fixation of the frame to the opening or unevenness on the door itself. In this case, you need to rehang the door and level the door with a file or plane, depending on how skewed the door is.

Replacing glass in a door should be done in the following sequence:

  • Remove the door and place it on any flat surface.
  • Remove the glazing beads and remove the glass.
  • Take measurements for another glass surface.
  • Insert new glass, replace the beading beads and hang the door in place.

It should be noted that when taking measurements of new glass, you need to make it 5 mm smaller than the old one. This is due to the fact that wood tends to swell, collecting moisture, and glass may not withstand the stress and burst.

Tips: how to prevent the door from closing on its own

Sometimes it seems that interior doors seem to live their own special life: they open or close on their own when they want. How to fix this and what to do in this case?

If the door closes spontaneously, this indicates the presence of a distortion in its lower part. Using a building level, you can find this place and adjust it.

Perhaps the problem is the uneven position of the rack - if it is even slightly offset vertically, the door will “walk” constantly, and then begin to get stuck completely. Only reinstalling the door frame will save the situation.

You can also try to correct the spontaneous movement of interior doors in another way, which is to create increased resistance in the hinges. Moreover, it is not necessary to adjust each of them. It is enough to bend one hinged “finger” in the loop. At the very least, two.

What to do to prevent the door from closing on its own:

  1. First you need to remove the hinge. To do this, you need a support that should be placed under the door on the handle side (this could be, for example, old magazines). This step is necessary in order to avoid dangerous pressure on the door hinges.
  2. Next, using a hammer and screwdriver, you need to pull the “finger” out of the topmost loop.
  3. Then the pulled out part must be taken to some concrete or asphalt surface and hit in the middle with a hammer. This will give a nice bend. The main thing here is not to overdo it, otherwise you won’t be able to put the hinge in place.
  4. Finally, all that remains is to insert the removed part into place. The resulting bend will provide the necessary resistance when the door operates. Thus, it will only be able to move if someone makes an effort.
  5. If this measure does not help, you will have to do the same for the other loop.

This is how you can eliminate spontaneous closing of room doors.

Sagging and self-opening doors: how to fix the situation

Sometimes it happens that the door, no matter how much you close it, keeps trying to open itself and often with such actions causes inconvenience to others.

Free movement of doors is a problem, although not catastrophic. A mortise lock can help temporarily “rein in” the door structure, but sooner or later such a door will still need repairs.

If the door often opens on its own, there is a misalignment at the top that needs to be corrected. It is likely that some of the bars are poorly secured. The angle between the bars should be 90 degrees - in this case everything will be fine.

If the problem really is the skew of the door leaf, you need to remove the frame, connect the bars correctly and screw them well to the corners of the frame with screws.

By the way, sometimes it happens that self-opening doors are “born” due to a broken handle. She may simply not be pushing up to the required level. In this case, it is necessary to remove the handle and change its spring.

One of the reasons for the independent opening of the structure may lie in the swelling of the tree due to its contact with a wet surface or high humidity in the room. To prevent the door from opening on its own, you can treat the trim with a simple plane, which will help eliminate this problem.

But what to do if the door is sagging? There are several solutions:

  1. One of the most common causes of a sagging door is loose hinges - in this case they just need to be tightened.
  2. If the door sags due to small hinge grooves, they need to be deepened. This can be done with a regular chisel, after first removing the hinges and door leaf from their place. Then everything needs to be returned to its place.
  3. If the geometry of the door itself is broken, it needs to be returned to its correct shape using a plane.

Here's what you need to know if you need to fix a sagging door or open it yourself.

The door is broken or cracked: what to do in this case

When there is constantly low humidity in the room or temperature fluctuations occur, wooden doors can dry out.

The easiest way to restore a cracked door is to use metal corners. But it should be borne in mind that they can disrupt the appearance of the structure.

How to repair a door if it has dried out:

  1. You need to start by dismantling the structure: the door is removed from its hinges and disassembled.
  2. Next, all disassembled parts are lubricated with special glue.
  3. All existing cracks and drying areas are carefully masked, after which the door is placed on the clamps and dried.
  4. After the composition is absorbed, the structure is hung in its place again.

Sometimes it happens that a breakdown forms on the surface of the door due to physical impact. What to do in this case? It is best to disguise the hole.

If the damaged area is at the bottom of the door, you can cut it out with a jigsaw and put a ventilation grill there, which should be selected taking into account the size of the hole and the color of the structure.

If the hole is at the top or in the middle of the door, it is better to insert glass or panel into the space that appears.

Modern repair of interior doors with your own hands (video)

Interior doors can work for a very long time without needing any restoration. But sooner or later something may fail. There is no need to panic and try to urgently replace the doors. You can really fix everything with your own hands, without the presence of specialists. The main thing is to correctly determine the cause of a particular defect and then eliminate it.

A problem may arise such as spontaneous opening or closing of the door. You walk past the passage, and it opens. You leave the door ajar and the door closes on its own. There are a number of reasons for this problem, and a whole list of solutions to the problem.

Reasons for independent life of the valve

Drafts from a spontaneously opening door

Spontaneous opening or closing of a door in a home or in a building of any type is a normal phenomenon that can occur both with a newly installed structure and with a ceiling that has already served faithfully for more than one year (or even a dozen years).

The independent life of a door leaf, for example, in a home environment, is an unpleasant phenomenon that causes a lot of inconvenience. This fact can not only be very annoying, but also lead to negative consequences. After all, we count on a certain degree of protection for the door covering.

Doors with completely different service life require certain care and periodic minor repairs, and if the door begins to close or open on its own, then this is a signal for action.

The reasons for door malfunctions are largely individual:

  • A door frame that is “piled up” forward or backward.

You can check this fact using a building level. The level should show the verticality of the hinged timber of the box.

Incorrect installation of the door frame relative to the vertical

Correct installation of the door frame relative to the vertical

  • The door hinges are not installed correctly relative to the axis.

This can be seen visually or checked using the attached level. Overhead or mortise hinges must be located on the same axis of the hinge beam. Shifting one of them can cause involuntary closing/opening of the sash.

  • Poor installation of door hinges.

Groove for hinges at the end of the door

Poor behavior of the door leaf may be due to incorrectly installed hinges. The grooves for the hinges could have been cut out incorrectly, that is, a groove was made deeper for one hinge, shallower for the second, or skewed.

This can be seen when one side of the hinge protrudes more than the plane of the beam post, or the entire part protrudes. The reason for poor installation of hinges may also relate to unevenly made holes for fasteners with self-tapping screws. As a result, the screws will be crookedly wrapped into the hinge plate, which pulls the element a little to the side.

  • Poor quality hinged awnings.

If the frame is checked by level, and the hinges are planted evenly in the beam, then the reason for the spontaneous behavior of the sash may lie in the poor quality of the elements themselves. The hinges could become loose after even a short time, which disrupts the verticality of the canvas. In this scenario, when the door has been recently installed, the hinges should be changed as if they were defective.

The door frame and all the difficulties associated with it

The ideal verticality of the installed door frame is practically the main argument for the effective functioning of the opening covering structure. If, when checking with a level, as noted above, the tilt of the hinge beam stand in one direction (forward or backward) is revealed, then this gives the spontaneous life of the canvas relative to closing/opening.

Checking the door frame installation level

An exception may be if the building itself or the partition where the door is installed does not have a clear vertical line. In this option, you need to tilt the stand in the opposite direction.

In case of loss of verticality of the rack, it turns out that the hinges are not installed correctly on one axis and give a slope to one side. It’s worth figuring out what to do in such a situation:

  • Opening outward (relative to the opening stroke) indicates that the slope of the sash is directed in the opposite direction from the door frame.

The situation is corrected with the help of a piece of material that needs to be laid under the upper canopy. Of course, it must first be dismantled, just as the sash itself must be removed from its hinges. If the situation cannot be corrected, and the door still opens, then it is worth taking other actions.

Door frame repair methods

The door frame will need to be re-installed to align it vertically. To do this you need:
remove all fasteners holding the rack;
remove the canvas itself from the loop awnings;
clean the timber from foam and other building material with a construction knife or just a sharp knife;
use a level to measure the exact vertical location of the stand;

Attaching hinges and sash behavior when fastened incorrectly

Drill holes in the timber for new fasteners using a long drill;
secure the holes with dowels;
hang the beam in its original place, and using an electric drill, screw a couple of screws into the upper and lower hinge strips, which will help track the level of correct installation;
hang the canvas and check its opening slope when open at 45°;
After you make sure that the installation is vertical, the hinges can be screwed on completely.

The reinstallation process is completed by knocking down the timber, re-foaming the gaps and installing the platbands. The installation of the door frame, in this case, may not have been correct from the start, or it may have gotten a little worse over time.

  • Closing the door leaf towards the door frame.

The door leaf needs to be lifted or a stop placed under it

Arbitrary closing of the doors will help eliminate the same piece of material of suitable thickness, but installed in this version under the bottom hinge. To do this, the canvas should be raised a little. If this does not help eliminate the defect, then you should do all the same manipulations as described above. It is quite possible to fix each of these problems with your own hands, where you will need to reinstall the door frame, that is, the hinge and the opposite post. Of course, when adjusting the frame, you may also need to re-insert the door hinges.

The problem in the loops is solved

Spontaneous opening/closing of the door can be controlled if you use an opening limiter.

Decorative stop for interior door

This is effective, but, unfortunately, not comfortable for constant use at home. A door closer can correct the situation, but to install a hidden door closer you will have to make a very labor-intensive insertion of the part into the canvas, and the overhead version is too rough for use in a residential area.

So, if the opening limiter is not to your liking, and the frame is installed vertically (measured with a building level), then the problem of arbitrary opening will be solved with the door hinges.

Markings for hinges should be done carefully

Moreover, if the door is sagging, which is likely when the door is made of natural solid wood, then there is clearly a problem with the hinges.

Door hinges are the main functional element in a door structure, and their failure disrupts the comfortable balance of the door’s functioning. The problem with hinges is common, but solvable. To do this, we will have to, if not repair the hinges, then definitely delve into their life:

  • not completely, but by about a third, unscrew the screws from the upper or lower hinge strip (depending on which direction, the blade tilts);
  • place a piece of cardboard under the plank, aligning the loop vertically;
  • tighten the screws and check the installation.

Fasteners unscrewed for work

If self-closing begins to occur, we recommend doing the same with the second loop.

Over time, the seat of the hinge fasteners may become loose. To do this, you also need to slightly unscrew the screws, about halfway, and insert a piece of cardboard or other sealant into the socket. Then screw the fasteners back in and check the operation.

If none of the above operations help, then a new insertion of door hinges will be required. That is, move them from their previous mounting. It is also permissible to simplify your activities by trying to drown them a little deeper into their own nests.

When renovating an apartment or house, a lot of effort and energy is spent on choosing interior doors. They should decorate the room, provide reliable sound insulation and protect from drafts. And so - beautiful doors are installed, but then it turns out that they are not able to protect from noise and wind, since they close and open poorly and, in addition, they also creak like a rusty gate.

Main disadvantages

Interior doors are subject to less stringent requirements than entrance doors. They should not be so durable, heat-insulating, soundproof. It is unlikely that a professional burglar will live in the next room, so protection against unauthorized opening, like serious locks, is also not needed. The main functions of interior doors are to decorate the apartment, protect against light drafts and provide acceptable sound insulation.

However, poorly adjusted doors may not meet these minimum requirements. The main disadvantages may be poor or incorrect closing, opening, squeaking and noisy slamming. To combat these shortcomings, it is necessary to know the reasons that cause them, and also to decide who should carry out the adjustment work. You can do this yourself, or you can invite specialists.

Poor closing

Poor or loose closing of interior doors can be caused by the following factors:

  1. The skew of the door frame is due to improper connection of the beams. Eliminated by more tightly fastening all components of the box using screws. To do this, the box must first be dismantled;
  2. Insufficient deepening of the hinges into the box is eliminated by tightening the screws securing the hinges. If this does not help, you need to remove the box and deepen the niches for the hinges;
  3. Excessive deepening of the hinges in the door can be solved by loosening their fasteners.

This work is simple, but it requires certain skills in handling a screwdriver for tightening screws, a plumb line for determining the verticality of the surface, a hammer, a chisel and a plane for deepening the niches of the hinges. The video shows in detail how to adjust an interior door with hinges.

Poor opening

In order not to fall into the position of engineer Shchukin on the staircase, when “there was only one thing left for him to do - disappear,” all apartment doors should not only open easily, but also close at the right moment. This also applies to interior doors; if they close at the wrong moment, they can cause unpleasant consequences in the form of injuries and partial hearing loss.

How to adjust if the door closes by itself is shown in the photo. To do this you will need a screwdriver and self-tapping screws. The causes of a defect in which the door constantly strives to close on its own or requires the application of certain efforts to open it can be:

  1. Loose door frame - the disadvantage is eliminated by tightening loosely screwed screws, which leads to stretching of the frame. In the most drastic case, the box is removed and the entire box is adjusted with self-tapping screws;
  2. Excessive deepening of hinges - eliminated by loosening the fasteners;
  3. Incorrect installation of hinges can be corrected by moving the hinges inward and adjusting the fasteners.

Anyone can adjust the hinge of an interior door so that it does not close using a screwdriver and self-tapping screws.

Unpredictable door behavior

In addition to poor opening and closing, there is another drawback that it is advisable to eliminate in time. In some apartments, owners prefer to keep the door half open, especially at night, for example, in order to hear a small child sleeping. In this case, it is desirable that no light from the next room enters the nursery, and that the sounds are somewhat muffled by the half-closed door. An incorrectly adjusted door will not lock in this position and will tend to either open or close on its own, making creaking and rattling noises.

This defect is caused by the deviation of the door frame or leaf from the vertical. To eliminate it, it is necessary to align the beam on which the hinges are attached strictly vertically. This is done without dismantling the box. After eliminating the distortion, the noise of a door closing at the most unexpected moment will disappear forever. You can get rid of squeaking by simply lubricating the hinges. After removing the canvas, it is necessary to coat the hinge rods with grease based on grease.

Execution of work

Workers who carried out repairs in the apartment must adjust them when installing doors. However, there are cases when doors become deformed over time and the geometry of the walls changes. This is especially true for new houses. In these cases, the doors again begin to require additional adjustment. You can try to do this yourself. The work shown in the video looks easy, like any task performed by a master. It is not difficult to adjust the work yourself if you have tools and some skill.

However, this also requires experience in carrying out such work and time. Many people experience a chronic lack of both. Not everyone has tools either. This applies primarily to people engaged in intellectual work. But even those who are accustomed to physical labor will have a hard time without skills. Nowadays, there is no shortage of specialists of any profile, including carpenters.

To carry out such work, it is better to invite professional carpenters. They have the appropriate tool. They usually have extensive experience in carrying out such work. Everyone has a special education. Even a specialist is unlikely to cope with such work alone, so the team consists of two or more people. They will do the job quickly and efficiently.

It is better to pay extra money, and not very much, than to spend a huge amount of time on your own and get a dubious result. You cannot skimp on comfort and beauty, just like on food.
