American industrialists of the middle of the last century, renting out only slightly converted premises of empty factories and factories as cheap housing, hardly felt like the founders of a new style in interior design.

Nevertheless, the gloomy simplicity of smoky workshops, warehouses and workshops, contrary to all expectations, appealed not only to poor students and artists, but also to high society bohemia.

The latter, tired of the invariably chic, seemingly combed and ironed environment, initially used the abandoned industrial area for parties and avant-garde shows, and then moved to live here altogether, completely displacing students and artists.

The new style began to be called briefly and succinctly - Loft, which translated from English means “attic”.

In our country, Loft was “tried” quite recently and most of the out-of-the-box lovers of new and unusual solutions liked it. We'll talk about how Loft manifests itself in different environments.

Following the main traditions of the style, the loft office is transformed from a set of cramped closets into one huge space with high ceilings and panoramic windows.

This organization of workspace today is called Open Office or Coworking, while employees of one or several different companies can be located in a combined room.

The maximum that can be allowed in the design of an office loft is the installation of low partitions that delimit the space into “cubes”. Neo from the legendary “Matrix” worked in one of these “cubes”.

All the attributes of a classic loft - unplastered brick, beams and cast-iron stairs, as well as powerful ventilation ducts laid openly along the walls - are welcome in the office.

Design of a restaurant and cafe in a loft style

A non-standard creative environment that creates the illusion of a parallel world is the key to the success of any public establishment where people come to relax and have a snack. From this point of view, the loft seems to be a very effective solution.

Three rules of a loft in a restaurant remain unchanged:
  • space;
  • lack of finishing on brick or concrete walls (imitation is allowed);
  • communications and supporting structures exposed.

A loft-style restaurant is not divided into banquet and dining rooms: both areas are parts of one room. To separate them, you can use furniture, translucent partitions or a specially selected type of lighting.

Restaurant furniture in the loft style is characterized by functionality and minimalism. But these concepts should not be confused with excessive modesty.

Ultra-modern or vintage furniture fits best into a loft. A restrained and calm color palette with a well-defined emphasis on one of the tones is welcome.

The most suitable materials for loft style furniture are chromed metal and glass.

Restaurants, bars and similar places are evening establishments; the bulk of visitors flock here after dark. Therefore, such a characteristic Loft technique as huge floor-to-ceiling windows becomes ineffective here.

The natural in the restaurant is replaced with a set of strict, monotonous ones, suspended by means of long strings or brackets at a low height.

The design of a restaurant in a loft style somewhat limits the designer, forcing him to shift the emphasis towards universal solutions. This is due to the diversity and level of the public visiting enterprises of this kind.

The design of a cafe as a more youthful establishment can be much more bold and extravagant.

A stylized and expressive interior predominates here, and the columns, trusses and rough boards on the floor that are characteristic of the Loft can, due to lack of space, be purely symbolic.

Apartments

In the apartments of our compatriots, the loft is still rather timidly represented, mainly because most of our city apartments have nothing to do with the concept of space. However, the new style is attracting more and more interest among fans of unusual design.

The standard solution in our conditions is to create a studio - a relatively large room that combines a kitchen and a living room.

An apartment loft largely contradicts traditional concepts of comfort. Instead of bulky luxurious furniture, it is customary to install light, functional items that take up as little space as possible.

At the same time, the loft setting is completely opposite to the usual home one: armchairs and sofas have a chassis and are installed at a distance from the walls. Sofas with “variable geometry” and anything that emphasizes the inconsistency characteristic of a loft are considered traditional.

A classic of a home loft, like any other, is considered to be brickwork that does not have a plaster finish. In panel and concrete houses, it can be imitated or replaced with an alternative - a conspicuous rough concrete surface and the same floors.

We must not forget about utility networks, which, as visual propaganda, are demonstratively laid in the most visible place. Of course, in old houses such elements will have to be imitated with sections of pipes and ventilation ducts, as if protruding from the walls.

These simple techniques will help you recreate in your home that same loft that has been winning the hearts of millions around the world for more than 50 years.

Appearing relatively recently, loft-style design has already become part of modern, stylish interior solutions. Do you want to update your apartment or house in this style, but don’t know how? We will tell you about all the nuances of finishing, decor, textiles. We’ll also take a closer look at the example of each room on what exactly to focus on. The simplicity of the loft has no limits for any design.

Loft style design for an apartment

The main feature of the style is its versatility. Loft style can be seen both in small one-room apartments and in spacious three-ruble apartments, country houses, studio apartments and even offices.

The loft has become widespread in the field of interior design due to its excellent functionality (minimum furniture and accessories - maximum space). At the same time, the colors in the design directly depend on the direction of the loft style (bohemian, industrial or glamorous).

Among experienced designers, she received the definition of industrial-urban interior style, and for good reason. Visually, such an apartment may resemble a basement, wine cellar, attic, or industrial building due to the peculiarities of the finishing.

Huge window openings, walls covered with simple plaster or lined with brick, open communications, beams - all this is a loft-style design for an apartment. In addition to this, there are many other important characteristics that should be adhered to in order for your home to be as similar as possible to a loft apartment:

  • Openness of space - a feature of such apartments is the absence of interior doors; thanks to this move, the living space visually increases. Of course, this rule does not apply to the bathroom. It should simply be disguised, for example, as a brick wall. The same applies to the bedroom.
  • Undisguised auxiliary structures (open bookshelves, cabinets, fireplaces, etc.).
  • Walls that are the color of brick or rough plaster. To finish surfaces, you can use natural stone, brick, paint or wallpaper with an imitation of a brick wall.

Urban, filled with charm, the loft style is often used in the interior of apartments with a small area and studios. And the interior decoration will directly depend on the area, preferences in colors and materials.

Variety of directions

The world first heard about the loft in the 50s, when the United States and then Europe experienced a terrible crisis. Plants and factories ceased operations, and empty premises were converted and turned into residential apartments. Translated from English, the word loft means: attic, top floor of a warehouse, attic, etc.

If earlier such apartments really resembled a factory workshop or a carpentry workshop, now loft-style design has improved. Designers use many directions. All of them allow us to emphasize the courage of the owners of a loft-style apartment.

A loft helps to harmoniously combine concrete floors, peeling wooden flooring, somewhat sloppy brick or plastered walls with modern appliances, furniture, and decorative elements. Conventionally, interior designers of our time divide loft into several main areas.

1 – looks like an old factory building, furnished with taste. In such an interior, everything is imbued with creativity: shabby furniture, sometimes as if picked up from a city dump, organically coexists with new design solutions and modern technical filling. Avant-garde paintings, sculptures, and musical instruments, arranged in any form, are selected as decorative elements.

2 – features an unusual, non-traditional color scheme for the style. For example, a combination of pastel and spectral, rich tones (white-lilac, white-brown, etc.). Considerable attention should be paid to the decor of an apartment in the glamorous Loft style, the main highlight of which will be antique mirror surfaces, carpets in the shape of the skin of a killed bear, large house plants, antique chandeliers, floor lamps and other similar elements.

3 – a common style for apartment interiors. It is characterized by a light-colored finish. Furniture must match the design of the industrial premises. These can be metal structures, open ventilation and wiring, furniture of regular geometric shapes.

Loft-style design is ideal for people who value space, natural light and simplicity in the interior. Of course, in some cases, redevelopment may be required to increase the space and remove unnecessary partitions, but adding several elements in the attic loft style will work in almost any apartment.

Wall decoration

The loft style is truly unique. Typical wall decoration is concrete, plaster or brick of various textures and light colors.

It is important that load-bearing walls are massive, as in production and warehouses.

You should not remove absolutely all partitions, because they will be useful for zoning, fencing off personal space (bedroom, bathroom, restroom) or creating utility rooms. Such utility rooms will help “unload” the interior.

To zone an apartment, interior partitions made of glass blocks are often used, in the form of shelves under the ceiling or a sliding screen. If we are talking about a small apartment or studio, then you can delimit the space using furniture (bar counter for the kitchen, etc.) or flooring, changing its color, material, texture.

If we talk about painting walls in a loft style, then they should not be too bright and catchy. This will highlight the note of the pristine industrial loft style in the design. Perfect for this:

  • plaster;
  • water-based paint in pastel colors;
  • brick;
  • natural or artificial stone;
  • concrete;
  • decorative brickwork (budgetary and stylish);
  • wallpaper imitating brick or stone wall.

Flooring

In production, factory floors, and warehouses, we are used to seeing concrete floors. Of course, concrete perfectly reflects the loft style. Its disadvantage is the impracticality of the coating and the cold emanating from it, which is not at all suitable for a living space.

Other materials that match the design in the loft style will be an excellent replacement for concrete flooring:

  • Mosaic concrete.
  • Natural wood or laminate imitating plank flooring.
  • Parquet board.
  • Ceramic tiles, suitable for the bathroom or kitchen.
  • Natural, artificial stone, marble.

Carpet runners with discreet patterns or plain ones would also look appropriate.

Tiles imitating concrete - more practical

The loft style often uses combined flooring (tiles and laminate, wood and stone). This helps to diversify the interior and divide any living space into zones.

Ceiling and windows

If your apartment has high ceilings, then you should use already rooted materials for their finishing:

  • tree;
  • wooden beams;
  • large ventilation pipes;

If the ceilings in the apartment are low, then you can limit yourself to plastering or painting the ceiling white or any other light shade.

As for windows, they should be as high and wide as possible. The more natural light that comes into your home, the better! An excellent choice would be floor-to-ceiling windows that offer views of a beautiful landscape, which corresponds to an American loft.

Advice

To increase the amount of sunlight entering your home, you should abandon blackout curtains, limit yourself to sheer curtains, or refrain from using them altogether. You can highlight the design using cotton roller blinds, for example, vertical or horizontal blinds.

Loft style decor

Any loft-style room should not be too overloaded. There is no need to use a lot of bright decorative elements. The following will help highlight your unique design:

Don't use a lot of bright decorative elements

In the last century, the owners of loft-style apartments were mainly writers or artists, so it is better to arrange decorative elements chaotically to create a feeling of creative disorder.

Advice

Use various design objects, this will help highlight the uniqueness of the loft-style interior, unite the zones in the apartment, and add integrity and liveliness to the appearance of the apartment.

What should the lighting be like?

Dividing a loft-style apartment into zones is the main task of any interior designer or owner of such a house. Lighting fixtures can be used as a zoning tool. The more varied they are, the better.

What lighting fixtures should be used in an apartment with a loft design:

1 Massive chandeliers. Gray plaster, cold concrete, untreated brick - a chandelier will help add warmth to such a room and emphasize the loft style. This is a chandelier with a metal frame and a lampshade made of glass elements. It is suitable for lighting a living room, dining room or spacious hall.

2 Pendant lamps– multifunctional and most frequently used lighting devices. Many owners of loft-style apartments use designs with wires and chains, which allows them to adjust the location.

3 Floor lamps– will add coziness to a loft-style apartment. To illuminate a country house or a spacious apartment, choose large floor lamps with an unusual silhouette and large lampshade. For example, spotlights for stages, railway tracks, studios.

4 . Such devices are suitable for small apartments or studio apartments in the loft style. Bright lighting will visually expand the space, add volume to it and focus on zones.

If you often work at a desk or computer desk, and the main lighting is not enough for proper work, then you should take care of an additional light source. A simple metal table lamp on a flexible leg can complement the design.

Kitchen

Most often, a little space is allocated for the kitchen in an apartment with a loft-style design, especially when it comes to a studio or one-room apartment. . The decoration of a loft-style kitchen is no different from the rest of the room - wood, brick, etc.

As for furniture, glass products with chrome elements or metal parts would be appropriate. Modern appliances should occupy a central place in the kitchen:

  • large refrigerator;
  • dishwasher;
  • oven;
  • microwave;
  • coffee machine and other equipment.

There should not be a lot of kitchen furniture. It is better to furnish a kitchen in a loft style in the spirit of minimalism. An exquisite antique table, buffet or set of carved wooden chairs will become a bright note.

Furniture facades and appliance doors made in the same style or from a similar material will help harmonize the kitchen space.

Living room

If you have chosen a loft-style design for your living room, then you should learn how to place accents correctly. The focus should be on windows, furniture and decoration. Window openings should be large; shabby antique wooden frames will look harmonious in the interior.

The central position in the living room will be occupied by a sofa made of thick fabric or genuine leather. The area for relaxing and receiving guests can be supplemented with a small coffee table made of wood or glass, poufs, and armchairs.

Advice

To place decorative elements or books, it is better to use racks with open shelves.

Avoid any clutter: place decor on cabinet shelves, hang paintings and photos on the walls.

Bedroom

In any home, the most secluded place is the bedroom, so the loft style allows you to enclose it with walls, veiled doors or opaque sliding partitions. If your apartment has high ceilings, then you can arrange a bedroom on the second floor.

Features of the design and decoration of a loft-style bedroom:

  • To paint walls, use plain, light shades. Choosing these colors will make the room brighter and more comfortable.
  • To make the bedroom match the style, leave one of the walls untreated.
  • A small electric fireplace will help dilute the severity of the urban loft style.
  • A mirrored wardrobe or a dressing room with glossy sliding doors, or a large dressing table with a mirror will help to increase the space of the bedroom and add a little light to it.

Don't forget about decor, which adds liveliness to any room. Decorate the bed with beautiful decorative pillows and the floors with large vases of flowers or massive pots of plants. It is impossible for the selected decorative elements to stand out from the general loft style.

Advice

If the bathroom or bathroom is located next to the bedroom, then you can separate it using a glass partition. Different flooring will also help separate the zones, for example, laminate in the bedroom and tiles in the bathroom.

Bathroom

When decorating a bathroom in a loft style, you can resort to various styles, combining eclecticism and hi-tech, bohemian and industrial.

What plumbing fixtures and furniture will look harmonious in the interior of a bathroom with a loft design:

We must not forget about the technical equipment, because it is impossible to imagine the bathroom of a modern apartment without a washing machine. Regarding the decoration of the walls, choose light-colored tiles like marble or other natural stone.

Use tiles or granite for flooring.

Hallway

Often the corridors in apartments in multi-storey buildings are small, so by using light-colored walls and floors you can visually expand the space. The hallway should be well lit; use LED lighting, floor lamps or a large chandelier with several bulbs. Despite the fact that a loft-style room should be open, it is better to furnish the corridor with a mirrored wardrobe for outerwear or use a hidden niche for storing things and training.

A vintage chest of drawers or a large full-length floor mirror would be a harmonious addition.

Studio apartment

The space of studio apartments should be used especially rationally, so the best design solution would be the loft style, which implies minimalism in furniture and decor.

Design of a studio apartment in loft style: No partitions.

    In such apartments, the kitchen is often separated from the main room by a bar counter or dining table. Openness will visually expand the space and make the room brighter. The racks look beautiful, smoothly blending into the brickwork of the wall. Thanks to this design move, a unified style is created. A suitable addition to a small table made of glass or metal would be wooden chairs, folding stools or bar stools.

    Minimum set of furniture - studio apartments often cannot boast of a large area, so you should refrain from bulky walls and huge sofas. Choose a simple, solid-colored pullout sofa that can be placed against the wall or partition separating the guest room from the kitchen. A small angular coffee table, a bean bag chair, or a soft pouf would look appropriate.

    If your studio apartment has high ceilings, then you can allocate an upper tier for the bedroom. Select decor for the bedroom and other loft-style rooms based on your preferences. The main thing is that it is not too bright and unnecessary. For textiles in the bedroom, use only a matching bedspread and a small bedside rug.

The means of ascending to the second floor of a loft-style apartment (if there is one) is a comfortable staircase with glass, metal or glossy railings and sides. Try to stick to light colors in its decoration so that they match the decoration of the lower and upper floors.

Of course, the bathroom should be separated from the other part of the loft-style studio apartment.

Advice

Leave one wall untreated to preserve the style; the rest can be finished with decorative stone or tiles.

In a small bathroom, you shouldn’t go overboard with the plumbing. A toilet, an unusual washbasin with shiny taps, a white or bronze claw-foot bathtub will be enough to create the effect of antiquity.

Country house in loft style

Decorating the interior of a country house in a loft style is much easier than implementing an eclectic design in a small apartment. Large, spacious rooms, several floors, the possibility of finishing the facade - an ideal space to convey the atmosphere of an old factory workshop, warehouse or attic.

The clients represent an agency that solves creative problems every day, so the main goal of the architect was to create a modern office that would set the right mood and inspire fresh ideas. The ideal space for creativity was the empty workshop of the former calico printing factory, built in 1820. High ceilings, large windows, old rough-textured wooden floors, clinker brick walls became the starting point for creating a design project in the loft style.

The customers wanted to emphasize the scale and historical character of the building, but at the same time dilute the vintage style with modern details. “The wall with two large windows was covered with plasterboard. I wanted to “open” it and find out what they were trying to hide there. It turned out that the tiles that were often used in industrial premises of the last century were preserved on the wall. I suggested that the customers leave everything as is, or paint it a uniform color, keeping only the outlines. We agreed on the first option, and I just decorated the window openings with oak slopes and a window sill to create coziness,” says Alexey.

The layout gave preference to the modern open space format. The space was demarcated using glass and metal partitions, shelving and due to the non-uniform decoration of the walls - it is different in each zone. Modern office spaces have long ceased to be simple places to work: today they are a space for intellectual and creative work, for rest and relaxation in between. The place of work must be comfortable, otherwise good employees will leave and the company will not be able to continue operating. It's no surprise that the work environment receives so much attention. An office is an excellent opportunity to create a multifunctional, comfortable space and an open environment for the exchange of ideas. It is this design that is actively used by various coworking centers, as well as other similar organizations.

  • A loft-style office must be divided into zones. Typically this includes staff offices, a relaxation area, a space for exchanging ideas, and a common area. It is sometimes wise to make partitions between them;
  • the entrance group should be located next to the meeting room, and it is preferable to place workplaces further away so that visitors do not distract employees;
  • Each loft-style office workplace must be equipped so that a person feels comfortable. You cannot place loft-style office furniture so that a person sits with his back to the entrance;
  • Loft-style office design should not impose restrictions on the functionality of the space. So, natural light is great (the main principle of loft), but you should take care of bright artificial lighting;
  • The idea of this interior direction assumes that the most modern types of furniture and equipment will be used.

The design of an office in a loft style fits perfectly with the very idea of an open office, which is currently dominant in creating comfortable workspaces. It is this layout that allows us to create a creative and friendly atmosphere for the company’s employees.

Office furniture

Furniture for a loft-style office should be practical and functional. But we should not forget about convenience. The following types of furniture are traditionally used:

  • work chairs. It is very important to pay enough attention to this aspect, since the comfort of the workplace is the main factor influencing the well-being and productivity of the employee;
  • You should take care of sofas or seating areas. Shapeless chairs are often used, sometimes hammock chairs or other unusual types of furniture are hung;
  • The main feature when decorating an office in the loft style: everything should be done minimalist, but not overly modest. Modernity is a key concept. Samples of “smart” furniture are suitable;
  • ultra-modern furniture samples for a loft-style office are excellent;
  • materials: wood, chromed plastic and metal, glass, genuine leather and substitute.

When decorating an office in a loft style, the choice of furnishings is wider. They often purchase expensive furniture and things made from natural wood. A personal account is a personal space, often it has elements of luxury. This is difficult for loft design; such luxury should be careless, as if random.

"Working" colors

Decorating an office in the loft style involves using the same colors that are typical for other interiors in this direction: it is a light palette, calm and restrained. Pastel colors predominate, white is actively used. Gray concrete, terracotta brick, different shades of brown wood: these are the most common colors that are quite suitable for the workspace.

They often depart from the canons and create a loft-style office using corporate colors. And here you can get a riot of bright colors: it all depends on the signature set of shades. If the office interior is too bright, you can compensate for this with huge windows and plenty of light. It is very important that there are color accents in the office, but that this does not distract people from their work.
