Traveling is always pleasant, but not everyone likes to pay for expensive hotels or stay only within the city limits. Motorhomes have become a great solution for long-distance travel, but motorhomes and caravans of this type come with a ton of additional costs. They need to be registered separately, take out insurance and receive a new category of rights.

Pickup truck owners can avoid all this. For such vehicles, compact residential modules are provided that turn the vehicle into so-called truck campers. They are installed on the base of the machine. The structure itself protrudes above the driver's cabin, giving the driver and passengers a full-fledged place to rest.

Design Features

As a rule, residential modules are equipped with everything necessary. There is also a full-fledged sleeping place, a table for 2-4 people, and a small kitchen compartment. More expensive models even have a shower and toilet. Additionally, the living compartments are equipped with heating systems, plumbing, electrical equipment, air conditioning, refrigerators, lockers and various niches for storing things.

Healthy! Thanks to this configuration, a pickup truck can turn into a motor home, which is convenient to use during travel, expeditions, fishing, etc.

Typically, modules are made of lightweight composite materials (durable plastic, fiberglass or other modified compounds). As a rule, the modules are universal and can be installed on any pickup truck model. But, there are companies that make living compartments only for specific cars. Also, modules can have different shapes and vary in size.

Types of residential modules

The design can be solid (such modules are called monocoques) or sliding (allows you to significantly increase the space when parked).

There are also models with a rear overhang. Thanks to this modification, it is possible to increase the internal space of the living compartment; its length can reach up to 6 meters, and its weight can range from 300 to 1900 kg. In this case, the entrance is usually located on the side, and a shower and toilet are located inside. If you rely on the requirements for a hotel room, you can compare such a module with a “Lux” room. The maximum number of beds is 8.

Healthy! There are truck campers with retractable bay windows. Their weight reaches 3.7 tons. But such models are produced only in the USA for large-sized American cars.

If we talk about the disadvantages of such models, then they are, of course, much more expensive. In addition, the total weight of the car increases noticeably, and with it the fuel consumption (although large pickups already “eat” a lot of fuel). Also, such modules reduce the maneuverability of the car; it will not be possible to drive everywhere.

Modules that practically do not extend beyond the car cannot be longer than 3.9 meters. They have less usable space. In addition, such dimensions do not allow installing a bathroom. In such models the number of beds can reach up to 4. The entrance is located at the rear.

Such models are cheaper than analogues with overhangs. They are more ergonomic and have increased maneuverability in sloping terrain.

The cost of a residential module depends on the manufacturer, type and level of comfort due to additional equipment.

Most popular models

Economy class modules cost between 500,000 and 1,000,000 rubles. More spacious and equipped compartments will cost approximately 3.5 million.

Healthy! Of course, you can make a simple module with your own hands, but in this case it is important to take into account the characteristics of the car and create a reliable design.

If we talk about manufacturers, then for the most part campers come from China, but there are also European and domestic companies that offer decent products.

Geocamper

This camper is produced by the Russian company Kairos. This is a compact model without overhangs, but with good aerodynamics. The weight of the module with all equipment is only 250 kg, so it is suitable for almost any pickup truck. The height of the vehicle together with the residential module is approximately 3.5 meters. Due to the fact that the center of gravity of the module is shifted to the lower part, this increases the vehicle's cross-country ability.

The module is equipped with two windows and a door. The body is made of polymer materials with a protective coating. Inside, the elements are made mainly of fiberglass. The table seats 4 people, sleeps 2. Additionally, the module can be equipped with solar panels, batteries, and a shower. In the basic configuration, the camper costs 500,000 rubles.

Helix 1500

This is one of the most convenient models, as every centimeter of space is well organized in it. Outside there are boxes for storing water, fuel and much more. There is also a box with generators and gas cylinders. This is a transforming module. Its top cover lifts up and increases space.

The module weighs 495 kg, when folded its height is 164 cm, and when the upper part is disassembled it is 2.58 m. There are 2 sleeping places in module. This unit costs 650,000 in the basic configuration. If necessary, the buyer can order additional roof rails, ventilation units, solar panels, sockets, heaters, refrigerators, etc.

Lemberg

The cost of this Ukrainian-made camper is about 740,000 rubles. The buyer can choose the most convenient layout for himself. The module has 4 sleeping places, a washbasin, a kitchen unit, and burners. You can also order additional equipment. The fiberglass body is quite thick (from 3 to 7 mm), and can be insulated if desired. Plywood up to 15 mm thick is installed in the bottom of the module, thereby strengthening the entire body of the camper.

The module weight is only 300 kg. It is easy to remove and install.

Almost all models have a lot of advantages, especially if they are equipped with additional equipment.

Advantages of residential modules

Campers have a lot of advantages. First of all, they do not need to be registered with the MREO. In addition, the following modules:

  • Completely autonomous. In fact, they are full-fledged living quarters that can accommodate an entire family.
  • Allows you to travel to the most inaccessible places.
  • Compact. Almost all models are removable. This means that you can remove the structure and leave it in the forest or on the coast and go by car to buy groceries or see the sights.

  • Allows you to develop sufficient speed when driving along the highway. Caravans cannot boast of this.
  • Equipped with everything you need. You can live in such a module for quite a long time. At the same time, travelers can work fully, watch TV and use the Internet.
  • Easy to install. On average, it takes one person about 20 minutes to install the module.

Residential modules are often used for long expeditions. This is an excellent solution for hunters, fishermen and those who simply love nature and do not want to stick to standard tourist routes when traveling.

Gradually, the right accessories for them began to appear.
Hitherto outlandish residential modules that are installed in the body of a car began not only to be imported from abroad, but also to be manufactured here.
This is understandable; from a bureaucratic point of view, the module is a load in the back of a pickup truck and no additional documents are required for it. This means there is no need to undergo maintenance, receive certificates or register in any way. Accordingly, you don’t need a license in the cargo category, the usual category “B” is enough.

The pickup truck remains unchanged; there is no need to make any changes to the design. You can carry cargo as usual, go to work, and before vacation, screw the residential module into the body (installing the module takes 15 minutes) and go on a trip.
Of course, these same advantages are also disadvantages - the limited space of a pickup truck does not make it possible to install all the equipment that can be seen in full-size campers. But here it’s “either go or checkers.”

But compared to an ordinary autotourist, there are undeniable advantages:
Those who have pitched a tent in rain, slush, and cold probably remember how you don’t want to get out of a warm car and lay things out on the wet ground. Or another option - you are driving, traveling, looking for a beautiful place on the river bank to park... but night has come, there are no normal approaches to the river, and you just want to sleep. You have to set up a tent God knows where under the joyful howl of a mosquito, which informs all the inhabitants of the swamp that new food has arrived!
But with the module it’s a different matter. Everything is ready here. (like that snail that carries a house on itself)
We crawled into the module, boiled some tea, ate dinner, not forgetting a toast to those at sea to those who don’t have a camper and a bid for a dry bed.

This is the kind of wealth that can be acquired right now with just money.
If previously we only knew about the CONGO residential module from Chelyabinsk, now there is a camper manufactured by TS Atelier, which is a subsidiary of the official dealer of the Volkswagen concern in St. Petersburg, Neva-Avtokom.

What is the new module, how is it different from others, and what are its features?

Description of the residential module for the UAZ Pickup. Exterior.

And so in order:
In this position, on four jack supports, the residential module on the UAZ Pickup is waiting... when will we go on vacation:

In order to install the module in the body, you need to park carefully and lower your house into the body of the car with jacks.

This is what it looks like when installed

On the outside of the structure there is an Alcove that hangs over the cabin. Its impressive size determines a comfortable double bed measuring 1790x1930mm. There is a 60mm gap between the cabin and the Alcove, which, according to the manufacturer, is enough to prevent them from touching when moving.

On the outside you can see holes for installing side jacks and connectors for connecting electricity and water.

Connectors are standard for campers

Closer to the stern there is a niche for a gas cylinder, and at the same time all small things are stored there: an adapter for an electrical outlet, additional mirrors, tools, a stash :)

All this is on the left side in the direction of travel. On the right side, except for the holes for the jacks, no input/output devices were found.
If you look down under the module, you can see the legs on which the module is installed in a stationary position and a block of additional rear lights.

Although the door is not very high, it is difficult to get in and out if you are not used to it. It would be nice to provide a mechanism with folding steps. ( and a luminous inscription to Outsiders B)

The door itself in the open position is fixed by a painfully familiar mechanism - one to one, like the rear doors on the UAZ Bukhanka. Only pin ( hussars - be silent) is not on the door, but on the wall.

The layout of the module is classic: on the far side there is an alcove with a double bed, in front of it is a transforming table. On the sides there are seats that, through simple manipulations, turn into a sleeping place.

On the right side there is a wardrobe, on the left there is a bedside table that hides a niche with a gas cylinder and a heater.

Description of the residential module for the UAZ Pickup. Interior.

And so, let's go:

You can immediately see the predominance of wood in the interior, which immediately puts you in a “country” mood. Naturally, no one will build a module from the “array”; then it would turn out to be too heavy. The finishing is made with plywood. The seams are carefully treated with sealant.
The sleeping place is equipped with a window, and in the evening you can turn on the LED lamp and try to drain the battery and read books.

In general, the windows are standard for campers (by the way, you can order them from the bourgeoisie). So all the goodies are present here: the ability to open/close, a mosquito net, sun and a protective curtain.

For greater comfort, the windows can be closed with curtains.

The sockets are made in a splash-proof design - with a lid.

And the handles are anti-vandal and have a safety design - when pressed, they are recessed inwards.

Shelves are mounted on top, around the perimeter. The doors on them are hinged, on gas stops

To add rigidity, bulkheads are installed that are fixed with furniture corners.

The shelves are adjacent to the wardrobe.

Inside the closet there is a hanging rod. There is a "secret" compartment at the bottom. Due to its small height, it is most likely suitable only for slippers.

On the outer wall of the cabinet there is a control panel, which, theoretically, can show all the information in the house:
voltage of two batteries 12 V, level indicators: in the fresh water tank, in the waste tank, power load indicator, battery charging, pump switch.

Just below is an organizer for small items.

Additional lamps are installed under the shelves, and an autonomous heater control panel is mounted on the wall.

For natural light, a sunroof is very well provided.

An anti-mosquito net is integrated into the hatch

The same mesh is also on the front door, which allows you to turn the module into a life capsule separated from the outside, mosquito world.

To the left of the entrance is a bedside table, inside of which...

Autonomous heater Trumatic E2400. It provides thermal power of 2400 W. Gas consumption from 100 g/h at economical and up to 200 g/h at full load.

A valve that shuts off the gas supply and a control unit are also installed.

The central place in the living module is occupied by the table.
It is mounted on a guide and by pressing the lock the table can be moved left and right.

The table has a small “add-on” that can be unfolded and locked in the open position.

Table leg can be folded in half

This is necessary so that it does not interfere with the organization of the second bed. To do this, the table is completely removed, placed down, flush with the side benches, and a flat platform is obtained. It is laid with side pillows that previously serve as the back of the sofa.

Multifunctional pillows are made collapsible. By unzipping the zipper, you can remove the foam filling and wash the upholstery.

By the way, under the cushions of the side sofas there are small pockets for small items

And if you lift the hatches, edged with black rubber, you will find a system for attaching the module to the body of a pickup truck

The last secret place remains under the feet, namely under the table there are also niches for luggage.

The end of this secret box rests on the energy system of the module ship. If you open the lid slightly, you can see the installed “bags”, wiring for electricity consumers and fuses. ( It would be nice to have a functional diagram right there)

Notes.

What was noticed was that the cleanliness of the processing of plywood coverings did not always correspond to the ideas about the house. There were splinters somewhere, and somewhere it wouldn’t have hurt to put a couple more layers of varnish. In one place the plywood shrank and a small gap appeared.

About the steps for the entrance and the electrical diagram - already noted.
The attachment of the airbags to the sides of the body is made with Velcro, but the Velcro is not held on by brackets. The parentheses fly out.

Of course, the comments are not significant, but you always want everything to be at the highest level.

To operate such a booth on the road (on the highway and off-road), you only need common sense. First of all, in the choice of speed. The booth represents a load close to the maximum and slightly increases the center of gravity of the vehicle, and aerodynamic losses also increase.

On the road, the car behaves based on all of the above. On a normal highway, it is advisable to drive no more than 90 km/hour. Off-road - depending on the situation. Swinging is of course possible. To compensate for this, you can order the installation of air cylinders.

The cost of the module in the basic configuration: a box made of a full-fledged warm and durable sandwich (aluminum sheet, 45 mm polystyrene foam, 6 mm plywood), jacks (to lift the module and move in/out without problems) and a door) - 300,000 rubles (including preparation a\m for fixing the module). The rest is according to the customer’s needs.

The cost of the module in the presented configuration is 670,000 rubles

Alternatives

Unfortunately, the UAZ Pickup does not have as large a cargo compartment as a full-size pickup.
Because of this, it is practically only a rest room. But, for example, the VW Amarok, due to the greater length of the body and, accordingly, the living module, already accommodates a shower and toilet.

The full specification looks like this: 4 beds, folding dining table, gas interior heater/water heater, gas cylinder, 60L refrigerator, cassette dry toilet, additional gel battery, gas stove with 2 burners, sink (stainless steel), shower cabin, wardrobe (wood), lockers 5 pcs. (wood), electrical equipment 12\220 volts, electric entrance staircase. The cost of the module is 1"150"000 rub.
It is worth noting that a similar module from Bimobil (Germany) in Russia will cost from 2,500,000 rubles.

But UAZ is cheaper. Yes, and in the “outback” it’s more familiar with him.
It’s just a pity that we haven’t yet had the opportunity to test such an interesting application for Pickup under “combat” conditions :(

Additionally, you can look towards trailers:
On the forum

And now, in detail and constructively, discarding the emotional component.

The undoubted advantage of the module is, of course, mobility. He turned off the road or drove to a truck stop, turned off the engine, raised the roof and that’s it - the Nochlezhka is ready for the night. Lock yourself inside and do whatever you want - it's really a small house. This is what the inside of the module looked like during a month-long trip to Georgia; everything was done hastily and in rough form. There are kitchen utensils in a transparent box with an orange lid; in the near future a continuation of the sofa will be made there, which will become L-shaped. Under the attached sofa there will be another locker for things.

The main locker for things is located to the left of the entrance. Before the trip to Georgia, we managed to finish it and sew a mattress on it, which gave the module at least a little coziness. The wall of the module to the left of the sofa will also be covered with this fabric, and pockets for small items will be sewn on it. There should be a lot of pockets and compartments for storing a traveling backpack, so that everything is stored in its place. During a long route this is especially noticeable.

Opposite the locker is a countertop. I don’t even know what to say here - Convenient. I decided to give up the sink and built-in gas burner. There are several reasons for this. Firstly, it is a pity to devote space for a tank for dirty water and a large gas cylinder. Secondly, I don’t see the point in turning back a pipeline that will only work in the warm season. In the summer, it’s easier for me to rinse dishes outside. And cooking in those moments when there is no rain is more pleasant over a fire.

Under the tabletop at the moment there is storage, where chairs, a shower, a shower stall, an awning, shoes, a minimum set of tools and zip, toys and gas are piled up... In the near future, there are plans to make drawers and storage shelves under the tabletop. Perhaps there will also be a battery placed there that will be charged from a solar panel. Now the car only has an inverter. Lighting in a module of diode flashlights - one of them, in the photo below, is magnetized to a gas stove.

Sleeping area. I’ve written many times about sizes, but I continue to receive questions about “is it comfortable for three people to sleep together?” The size of the sleeping place is 200 by 180 centimeters - a full bed. The only discomfort was from the realization that it was painful to fall out of bed, and at night the small one constantly crawled towards the edge - I had to constantly be vigilant. Some kind of limiter needs to be modified.

p.s. The hatch is a great purchase. You can watch the stars, or you can spy on the world around you through a raised hatch without going outside.

At those moments when the bed is laid out on top, about a meter of working space remains in the lower part of the module. On the right on the sofa is a Tatonka tourist first aid kit. You can’t go anywhere without her, especially with a child. It’s a very convenient thing, you can carry it in the car, or when you go hiking, you can hang it on your belt.

Another illustrative photo showing the availability of space in the module with the upper bed extended.

Waiting room. I wrote about the awning. I wrote about canisters and showers.

Thermal insulation. Everything turned out great with thermal insulation. On cold days, the module was really warm and comfortable, the wind didn’t blow at all. In the heat, our maximum was +35, it was relatively comfortable to rest and hide from the heat - thanks to good ventilation, namely windows, a hatch, and large windows made of mosquito netting on the awning.

Moisture. Perhaps the biggest disadvantage of the module to this day remains moisture and the fight against its penetration inside. There are several reasons for this. Firstly, the module itself, I don’t know where, is leaking. There are no puddles inside, everything is dry and beautiful. But if you disassemble the floor, there are always traces of moisture under the module frame. There are few of them, but my mind is not ready to put up with it. Could this be how condensation accumulates? I'm already confused. Secondly, the roof, or more precisely the junction of the roof and the awning, was obviously made incorrectly, it needs to be redone. Or move the gas stops outside. Are gas struts on the street side normal? Refinishing the roof entails reworking the awning, which also leaks during heavy rain. During heavy rainfalls, an awning had to be stretched over the module. If it rained at night, it was especially annoying.

In general, the junction of the roof and the module is the biggest problem today that needs to be corrected.

On the sides of the tent there are two windows made of mesh, which are closed with curtains. The outer curtain goes down if it's raining outside.

The inner rod is lowered for warmth if there is a cool breeze from the mountains at night. The curtains have zippers and are secured with Velcro.

Driving characteristics, off-road, highway - everything is fine with this. Off-road the car behaves almost the same as without the module. On the highway, thanks to the loaded rear, it goes very softly and smoothly. The weight of the module during the trip to Georgia, with all our camping gear, was approximately 300 kg.

On the highway, a comfortable speed is 100 km/h. Consumption is approximately 10 l/100 km. There is a comfortable margin under the pedal for overtaking up to 120-130 km.

If you have any questions, ask, I will answer.

So, today we took a closer look at a ready-made solution from the GeoCamper company for installation in the back of a pickup truck. In order to turn a utilitarian truck into a motor home, you simply need to dismantle the tailgate, load the module and securely fix it. The module can be supplied in various configurations: from completely empty to fully equipped with everything necessary for a comfortable life away from home.

As can be clearly seen from this angle, the decision to leave the standard “trough” of the cargo compartment in place greatly limits the usable area and volume of the living module. But, nevertheless, this solution is the most popular, since it allows, if necessary, to dismantle the module and operate the vehicle directly for its cargo purpose.

The weight of the structure is quite impressive. Unfortunately, no special measurements were made, but the data in the papers of the transport company that delivered the module from Kaliningrad, the figures were seriously different from those declared by the manufacturer weighing 160 kg. The car, whose carrying capacity is already an impressive 1175 kg, received reinforced springs, increasing the permissible weight for transportation by 300 kg, and is also additionally equipped with air bags. But even after such modifications, the pickup still has a slight trim on the rear axle.

Let's take a look inside the living compartment. Below there are places for rest in a “sitting position” and immediately after dismantling the central table (not shown in the photo), you can additionally organize a small sleeping place, suitable for a child or a person of very compact dimensions. A full-fledged sleeping place is implemented on the “second floor”, in part of the module, which is located directly above the roof of the car.

Its dimensions are only a little more than a meter and in order to get a full two-meter bed for relaxation, you will need to “increase” it in length using a folding shelf. Thus, if someone wants to sleep, then it will no longer be possible to rest and eat on the “first” floor. This is a serious disadvantage of the layout, but you can’t think of anything else here. The dimensions of the luggage compartment of this car are only 1.5x1.5 meters, and the double cabin ate up the useful space that is so necessary for a full-fledged residential module.

Although for the owner of this particular car this is perhaps the only possible option, since he travels with his wife and two children and thus the options with SingleCab or RapCab are unacceptable for him.

Let's take a look at the inside of the module. On the left side there are service hatches with access to wiring, as well as water supply hoses and fittings.

The fuel filler necks look like this from the outside

Just above the 220 volt socket, controls the on-board network and external light.

Under the ceiling there is a window with a mosquito net and curtain, heater control and a screen with data on the temperature conditions inside and outside. Also, the upper ventilation hatch was partially included in the frame, without which in summer, in hot weather, it would be quite problematic to be inside.

Right there, on the left side, under the seat there is a dry “hair dryer” for heating the living space. The power of this device alone is quite enough for this volume.

On the right side there are compartments for things and various small things. “Velcro” fixes the pillow in a vertical position to make sitting comfortable and convenient.

Also, on the starboard side there is a washing unit combined with a gas stove. Below is a compartment for dishes and a 10-liter water tank.

Hatches, like most things used in the construction of residential modules, are taken from the yacht assortment.

To close the compartment, we turn the handle, which, so as not to interfere, is then recessed flush with the plane of the door.

Hooks for clothes have a safety tongue that will not allow them to come off while the car is moving.

The folding step can serve as a chair while cooking. It may not be as convenient, but it's better than nothing.

This is what the module looks like from the outside. In general, it is quite tall and a person of average height can stand almost at full height in it.

As a summary phrase, we can say that the inside of the module is still larger than it initially seems from the outside, however, a long stay in it in case of bad weather or cold season is still not so convenient, due to the limited internal volume and the inability to simultaneously use the dining area and bedroom

Also, due to the fact that the main weight of the structure falls on almost only one fourth of the car, the module greatly overloads the rear and puts a serious load on the frame. There are many known cases of frame failure when driving on graders and poor quality roads with modules of a similar layout.

In my opinion, it would be much more correct to build a “living module” based on a pickup truck with a one-and-a-half or single cab. This will allow the heavy module to be moved inside the base and significantly increase its living space.

The residential module (camper) is made of fiberglass by hand molding. The body is self-supporting monocoque type, providing exceptional structural strength with minimal weight.

Camper installation:

The module is fastened to the body using four screw ties (lanyards), which are attached to eye bolts installed in the pickup body - two ties in front from inside the module and two at the back. Rear tie bars can be attached to a tow bar or underrun bar.

Thanks to the presence of removable supports, the camper can be installed by one person within 20-25 minutes. The supports are offered optionally or can be manufactured independently according to the attached drawings.

General information:

The camper is transported in the back of a pickup truck as cargo. To install a camper, you do not need to make changes to the design of the vehicle, so no registration with the traffic police is required.

The aerodynamic design of the camper and its low weight avoids additional noise while driving and has virtually no effect on the handling and speed characteristics of the vehicle. The only exception may be driving in strong crosswinds due to the additional windage introduced by the camper.

Installing a camper also does not affect the off-road capabilities of the vehicle due to the absence of a rear overhang. This makes GEOCAMPER products unique compared to other types of mobile homes - trailers and motorhomes. Therefore, the lack of good roads and the lack of campsites are no longer an obstacle - with GEOCAMPER you simply drive your pickup truck wherever you plan and stop where you like.

The GEOCAMPER SCOUT model is produced for installation on a car frame.

Possible equipment of the camper:

Even the small volume of the camper’s premises allows its owner to be provided with complete comfort of living. GEOCAMPER can install almost everything that is currently offered by leading manufacturers of equipment for motorhomes and trailers.

Kitchen equipment:

Special small-sized gas and electric stoves and microwaves, refrigerators running on gas and from the car’s on-board network, gas grills, barbecues, etc.

Water supply and toilets:

Water tanks, boilers, small-sized kitchen sinks and sinks, special showers, stationary and portable dry closets.

Heating and hot water:

Gas and diesel auxiliary heaters are capable of providing room temperature in a camper even in winter at -20 for 7 to 10 days on one fill.

Power supply:

Installing 220 V electrical wiring will allow you to use any electrical appliances in the camper in equipped parking areas. It is possible to connect 12 V from the vehicle's on-board network. A solar battery and a gel battery will provide the required autonomy.
