Updating a lampshade for a floor lamp with your own hands, making a new one or repairing an old one is a good idea to give a fresh shine and a new mood to your home.

Change the frame or just the lampshade

How can you make a lampshade for a floor lamp with your own hands if the old one has worn out or no longer corresponds to the new time or new tastes of the owners.

Everyone loves floor lamps. This is the most multifunctional light source. It is so cozy to sit under it with knitting or a book, it can be moved, it is mobile and is an interior decoration. That is why the decor of the floor lamp so attracts the eyes of needlewomen.

Many people inherit lamps from previous generations, and perhaps at first they push them somewhere, but then the aura of old household items becomes attractive. There is a desire to repair an old floor lamp, update a lampshade, and all this at home.

This is a good idea, now there are so many ideas around and possibilities for their implementation that it’s simply awkward to sit with your hands folded. Whether you reupholster a lampshade on an old frame or remake a floor lamp is completely up to you; the process will be fun in any case.

Frame for lampshade

From wire disposable hangers

Using pliers, unwind and straighten the wire from disposable dry cleaner hangers.

Using a ruler and wire cutters, cut two pieces of straightened wire to the desired length. The length is equal to the length of the perimeter of the floor lamp shade

Use pliers to make a circle out of each wire with a hook and loop on the ends to secure the circle

Measure and cut two pieces of straight wire equal to the height of the lampshade + hem allowance for loops

Bend loops at both ends of these wires, use a round stick and pliers

Place the loop at one end over the circle and pull it off, and the loop at the other end over the other circle. Do the same with your own hands with the second wire. To secure the frame structure.

Glue the hinges. Glue for metal “Cold welding”, “Epoxylin”, “Superglue”.

Cut 4 pieces of wire equal to the radius of the circle minus the radius of the small circle for the light bulb, plus the hem allowance for the hook. You can calculate the radius from a known circumference using a formula known from school, or you can use an online calculator at allcalc.ru/node/783

Make a small circle for the light bulb with your hands from a piece of wire with a length slightly larger than the circumference of the light bulb socket plus an allowance for the hook. Connect the wire into a ring and glue the ends

Attach all 4 knitting needles to the large circle and to the small one.

A lampshade made using the macrame technique can be found even on the street, as an attractive advertisement for a store or a cozy cafe.

Lampshade made of threads

It is surprising that threads have been used for these purposes for several decades. The threads create a particularly cozy look, whether they are tightly packed together or scattered in sparse, light, elegant weaves.

  • Choose threads to harmoniously match the interior of the room
  • Use thick, thin threads; they hold their shape and color better. The loose ones pick up glue and become faded.
  • Before winding the threads, evenly lubricate the ball with Vaseline.
  • Use transparent glue that glazes when it dries.

For the black lampshade, we took a skein of black satin thread and 2m of strong black braid.

It is very difficult to part with your favorite things, especially if they are still in working order, but have become worn out in appearance. Therefore, many try to restore such things to their former luster and freshness through repairs, or even make them even more spectacular.

In the case of table lamp shades, this is more than possible. There are a great many options for updating them and even creating them from scratch. You can come up with your own or use the ideas of designers and simply creative people who have already implemented them and shared the result.

How to make a frame for a lampshade

In old table lamps, the frame usually does not undergo such irreversible changes and deformations that it cannot be used to create a new lampshade. But a person may not be satisfied with its shape or size, and then he has to make a new one with his own hands. The question is: how and from what?

The easiest way is to use aluminum or steel wire of such a cross-section that it holds its shape well. The skeleton of the future lampshade is formed from it.

Stages of workDescription

We cut out templates from cardboard for all lampshade diameters. It can be one if the shape is assumed to be cylindrical, two if it is cone-shaped, three or more if it is complex.

We cut off pieces of wire and form circles from it according to the template. Twist the ends tightly, using pliers if necessary.

We decide on the height of the lampshade and the number of vertical jumpers. We cut the wire for them 8-10 centimeters longer than needed.
We bend the excess ends of the wire perpendicularly and wrap them around the upper and lower circle. We additionally fix all joints and mask them with electrical tape. You can wrap it around the entire frame.
If the lamp does not have a stop for the socket, we modify the frame. Why do we first make a wire ring with a diameter slightly larger than the diameter of the cartridge and connect it to the frame posts with horizontal jumpers.

The frame can also be assembled by welding or soldering. When soldering, it is better to use soldering acid instead of rosin.

Advice. Ready-made items can also become the basis for a lampshade. For example, plastic or metal wire waste baskets, wicker vases or plastic bottles. They just need to cut a hole for the cartridge.

Making lampshades with a wire frame

So, there is a frame, you can think about what to dress it up with. The first thing that comes to mind is new textile clothing.

Fabric lampshades

To make fabric lampshades, you do not need to have a sewing machine or know how to sew. But you will have to make a pattern in any case. What you need is a sheet of newspaper or whatman paper, scissors and tape.

The newspaper is wrapped around the frame, the joint is secured with tape and the excess is cut off from the top and bottom. Then the paper cap is cut lengthwise and the pattern is transferred to the fabric, leaving allowances for the hems.

The edges of the workpiece are folded inward and ironed. Its dimensions after this operation should remain slightly larger than the newspaper pattern.

We wrap the fabric around the frame and glue the seam or carefully sew it with a needle and thread. We wrap the edges at the top and bottom inward and glue them to the frame.

With tailoring skills, you can make a lampshade of a more voluminous shape. And you don’t have to be tricky with the pattern. You need to cut a rectangle out of fabric according to the height of the frame and the length of the largest circle. This is usually the bottom circle of the frame. Of course, don't forget about seam allowances.

We sew the fabric from the wrong side with the short sides to form a cylinder, the diameter of which exactly matches the diameter of the lower part of the frame. Then we bend and stitch the lower edge and put the fabric cylinder on the lampshade. We assemble its upper part with uniform folds, temporarily securing them with pins, bend them onto the upper circle of the frame and glue them. All that remains is to sew a braid or lace strip to the bottom edge and tie the lampshade with a ribbon.

You can also insert an elastic band into the upper part of the fabric cylinder - the appearance of the lampshade will be completely different.

Lampshade from an old knitted skirt. Elastic band inserted on top

In the end, you can simply put a children's skirt of a suitable length on the old frame. It can be sewn from any fabric - calico, knitwear, jeans, organza, etc. The main thing is that the color and style should be in harmony with the interior of the room.

Lampshade made from napkins

Crocheted napkins and capes now seem to many to be completely unnecessary and old-fashioned things. Well, or simply not applicable in the interior of an apartment for its intended purpose. But it’s a pity to throw away items knitted by your mother or grandmother. But you can make a lampshade out of them, similar to a fabric one. Only first, all the napkins will have to be sewn into one fabric, the shape and size suitable for covering the frame.

Advice. To prevent the metal frame from being noticeable through the openwork fabric, paint it, wrap it with tape of a suitable color, or cover it with paper/cardboard, creating a hard inner layer.

A table lamp with such a lampshade will fit perfectly into a girl's bedroom in the Provence style.

Compare these two photos.

The same fabric is used here, but different finishing techniques. And the second lampshade looks more elegant, richer. The secret is in using not a whole cloth, but strips cut from the fabric and creating the effect of folds.

ImageDescription

You need to prepare a frame, thread and needle, scissors and durable fabric that does not fray around the edges.

The fabric needs to be cut into long strips 3-4 cm wide. Things will go faster if you simply cut it from the edge and tear it with a sharp movement.
The resulting strips are smoothed with an iron. If desired, you can fold the edges and press them inward, but this is not necessary. Simply trim off any loose threads.
The first strip is secured to the top of the frame using glue or thread.

And they begin to carefully wrap the frame in a circle, alternately wrapping the strip around the lower and upper ring. In this case, it needs to be stretched and laid with a slight overlap on the previous layer. Then the next one is hemmed to the first strip, trying to ensure that the seam is on the wrong side of the lampshade.

Having wrapped the entire frame, the tip of the fabric strip is hemmed from the inside. You can stop there - the lampshade already looks very attractive. Or you can make the edging with contrasting fabric.

A strip of this fabric 12-15 cm wide is folded on one side, the fold is ironed and double-sided tape is glued to it.

With the other side of the tape, the strip is glued to the edge of the lampshade and tucked inward. The tape must be glued on both sides, so it is bent along the axis.
The other edge is finished in the same way, and the excess fabric is carefully trimmed with scissors.

Instead of one fabric, you can use different ones, alternating stripes by color and width. It’s even more convenient to use ribbons - you don’t need to sew them.

Lampshade made of ribbons with bows

Alternatively, strips or ribbons of different colors are not sewn together, but the ends are left to hang down freely.

Ribbons and fabric strips are excellent materials for weaving. Having made the base according to the method described above, it can be intertwined with transverse or diagonal lines.

Lampshades made from braid, yarn, and twine look very original. If the frame has many intersecting ribs, they can be wrapped in different directions.

If a smooth fabric lampshade you have or made yourself is satisfactory in all respects, but lacks some zest, you can always decorate it. Beads, rhinestones, paper flowers and butterflies, fringe, etc. But there is a more original and effective way to decorate lampshades... with wood putty. It is best to use ready-made polymer putty. It comes in white and the color of different types of wood. White is perfectly tinted in any shade.

The technology is extremely simple: a flexible stencil is glued to the lampshade using tape, and then an even layer of putty is applied to it. After it dries, the stencil along with the tape is carefully removed along with the excess putty.

Other types of lampshades

If you don’t want to bother with wire, fabric and paper, you can use completely different materials and techniques for making lampshades. Here are some examples.

To make a lampshade in eco-style, you will need wooden or plastic embroidery hoops, quick-setting glue and slats.

The slats are cut to a length equal to the height of the future lampshade. And they stick to the hoop. That's it, the lampshade is ready. It can be turned into a full-fledged table lamp if several slats are made longer and used as a support.

Any work with wood is always exciting, because it gives you the opportunity not only to show your own imagination, but also to make something that fully suits your needs and tastes. Agree, it’s nice when there is something made by yourself in the house. Read on our website about how to make a wooden box with your own hands.

Lampshades made from disposable spoons

A 5-liter plastic container is most suitable as a frame for such a lampshade. It is this that is used in the proposed master class on making an original lampshade in the shape of a pineapple. But you can take any other container of a suitable size.

Using a sharp knife, cut off the bottom and neck of the bottle, leaving a hole through which the light bulb socket will fit.

We cut the cuttings from the plastic spoons, leaving “tails” 1.5-2 cm long. We paint the convex side of the spoons yellow with odorless paint. Acrylic is best.

Apply a drop of hot glue to the cuttings and glue the spoons with the painted side outward to the bottom edge of the bottle close to each other.

We glue the second and subsequent rows of spoons overlapping the previous one with an offset, in a checkerboard pattern. There should be no gaps between them.

In this way we cover the entire container.

From thick paper or thin green cardboard, cut out a circle with a hole in the center that matches the hole in the top of the bottle.

Cut the outer edge into large cloves and bend it slightly downwards. Glue it to the lampshade. Cut out long leaves from the same paper and insert them in a bunch into the top hole, having previously installed a cartridge in the lampshade.

Note. Lampshades made from materials that are not resistant to fire or strong heat can only be used with LED or fluorescent lamps.

Using this technique, you can create lampshades in a completely different style. If “Pineapple” will look great in a children’s room, then the lamp, the production of which is shown step by step in the following photos, will decorate the bedroom.

Tiffany lampshade made from a plastic bottle

A large plastic bottle can be an excellent basis for making a lampshade that imitates the Tiffany style - multi-colored stained glass mosaic.

The bottom part of the bottle is cut off. The cut can be smooth or curly. Then a drawing is applied to it and the contours are outlined with a special contour paint of golden or silver color. And after it dries, the plastic inside the contours is painted in different colors.

Lampshade made from paper plates

If your old table lamp has a thick cylindrical shade, you can transform it beyond recognition by using disposable paper plates. Their number is easy to calculate by measuring the circumference of the cylinder: one plate is needed for every centimeter.

Manufacturing instructions are given below.

Bend each plate in half, step back 5 mm from the fold line in both directions and draw two parallel lines.

Attach a ruler to these lines and, with a little force, draw along them with the blunt side of a knife or other pointed (but not sharp!) object.

Bend the plate along the punched lines and glue it to the lampshade using hot glue.

Glue the second piece and all subsequent ones close to it and at the same height.

This is what should happen in the end.

This method is known, if not to everyone, then to many. Instructions included.

Inflate the balloon to the desired size and lubricate it with Vaseline so that the threads soaked in glue do not stick to the rubber. You can also wrap it with thin cling film.

In a jar of PVA glue, use an awl to make a through hole just above the bottom.

We thread the needle and pass it through the jar, after which we remove the needle.

We wrap the balloon with thread and glue in any order until we obtain the required winding density. It is better to leave the area around the tail of the ball free so that you can then put the lampshade on the lamp.

We wait for the glue to dry completely and pierce the ball. Before this, the lampshade can be painted with aerosol paint from a can.

We decorate a ball of thread with paper, wire or fabric flowers, if desired, and put it on the lamp.

Video - How to make a beautiful lampshade with your own hands

A very unusual material for decorating a table lamp is metal clasps from tin beer and other cans.

For the first row, they are folded in half and secured to the top ring of the frame lampshade.

For all other locks, cut one ring in half and begin the second row, hooking the lock with the cut ears to two adjacent rings of the first row.

Having reached the bottom ring, the clasps are again bent inward with a hook and hooked to the frame.

These different, but very beautiful and original lampshades can be made from traditional and, it would seem, materials that are not at all intended for this purpose.

In those minutes or hours when the forces of nature are raging outside the window, be it rain or heavy snowfall, you want a warm, sincere and cozy atmosphere. As an option, immerse yourself in reading your favorite book, have a tea party with a pleasant interlocutor. You can also do some crafts, for example, building a frame for a lampshade with your own hands.

Those people who have a developed creative imagination will like this activity, because this is a way to show all their abilities. In addition, decorating your own home will only bring benefits, giving it a bit of charm and sophistication.

A number of advantages of independent work

When you make any crafts with your own hands, this implies the presence of certain advantages over finished products. Moreover, you can make any lampshade for a specific lamp with your own hands.

So, these advantages should be taken into account if there is a need to choose between purchasing a ready-made solution or making a hanging frame for a lampshade with your own hands. And there are many of them:

  1. First of all, this is an opportunity to end up with an exclusive lampshade.
  2. The master has at his disposal a much wider range of decorative designs than store-bought products can offer.
  3. In some cases, cost savings cannot be ruled out, and significant ones at that.
  4. Involving children in the process will develop their skills and creativity, which will benefit everyone.
  5. By putting a piece of your soul into your work, you can make an original gift to your loved ones. Elderly relatives will especially appreciate this - it will be a pleasant reminder of their grandchildren and children.
  6. You shouldn’t discount the psychological aspect either - after all, this is an opportunity to put your plans into practice, and then be proud of the result.
  7. Suitable for work are things that have been accumulated over the years, but have never found further use.

The listed arguments are quite convincing, and therefore you can now move on to analyzing the theoretical part, how you can make the frame of a table lampshade with your own hands.

Homemade frame

Without a doubt, the interior of any room should be filled with a special atmosphere where you can feel the comfort and harmony of your home environment. In this regard, every detail deserves attention, even seemingly trifles at first glance! But lighting fixtures are a completely separate matter, and in some cases they occupy a central place in the overall picture of the interior.

And as we know, it is not always possible to get what you want at a reasonable price. Therefore, we are increasingly inclined to the need to manufacture such products ourselves. This is especially true in cases where only the bases of old chandeliers, floor lamps, and table lamps remain. It would be a sin not to take advantage of this opportunity! Just a few more words worth mentioning about the types of lampshades:

  • frame structure;
  • frameless products.

Moreover, each of them has its own characteristics. But if you imagine everything in a general way, they also have similarities.

Frame for lampshade

Let's start by looking at frame lampshades. They have a rigid base on which the selected material is fixed. The frame can be of very different shapes and largely depends on the personal preferences and imagination of the manufacturer. And, of course, the availability of the necessary material is taken into account.

In addition, this design has a significant advantage - the distance between the lamp and the finishing material of the lampshade is immediately determined. It is maintained throughout the entire period of operation of the chandelier, lamp or table lamp.

In addition, the product turns out to be quite rigid (this quality is formed initially), which is already the main advantage of frame lampshades.

Frameless options

In fact, this can also be considered frame products, but with a noticeable difference. Here, the finishing material of the lampshade itself acts as a “solid” base. To give the required shape, a temporary frame is initially made, and the external decoration is attached to it. Typically using glue. And after the composition dries well, the base is removed.

When choosing the manufacture of such a “frame” of a lampshade for a table lamp, it becomes necessary to calculate in advance at what distance the device will be located. Its distinctive advantage is the low weight of the product in comparison with the frame version. However, there is a drawback - accidental deformation of the shape can lead to the material being dangerously close to the lamp. And this is already fraught with various consequences - from melting to fire.

This especially applies to manufactured lampshades for a tabletop floor lamp or lamp. They can be damaged due to accidental mechanical impact.

What to choose as a material

Since the topic of the article concerns the production of lampshades with a base, we will not consider other options. Then the question arises, how to make a frame for a lampshade with your own hands? More precisely, what materials can be used to make a good and durable structure?

Here you should take into account the condition of the old lamp - if you only need to update the lampshade, and the frame itself remains intact, then you can get by with choosing a new finishing material. But at the same time, it may also be that it has already lost its functionality and has become unsuitable for further use. It is possible that the lamp does not have a frame at all, but there is a desire to make one.

You can visit a flea market and choose some old version of a lampshade, which you can then update at home. And if this option does not suit you, then you should rummage through your own warehouse, where, most likely, you will find suitable materials.

Garbage Candy

This is one of those options on how to make a frame for a lampshade with your own hands, when you do not need to make any special efforts to form the frame - in fact, it has already been created. Why not the base of a metal trash bin? It's unlikely that it's worth a lot of money. In many hardware stores you can also find plastic options, but for our purposes we need metal options (for obvious reasons).

If the shape and dimensions of the basket suit you, then the frame is almost ready. All that remains is to carefully cut a hole in the center of the bottom and securely fasten the lamp socket. In most cases, the bottom of the basket is a solid metal sheet, which is already convenient.

Now you can begin further design of the lampshade. In some cases, it is enough to paint the mesh surface in the desired shade, and then decorate the upper and lower parts with some material.

Using wire

The most common material for making a frame is wire. The lampshade frame can be made using spot welding. However, here you need to have the appropriate skills and equipment, which not everyone has.

Therefore, it remains to fasten the elements by twisting. And since a rather thick material is generally used (due to its considerable rigidity and elasticity), they are fastened together with thin wire. An alternative is aluminum, but it is too plastic and easily deformed.

In addition to the material itself, you need to prepare a number of tools:

  1. Pliers - they will be used to bend and straighten the wire.
  2. Tongs with round jaws - convenient for twisting.
  3. Wire cutters - useful for cutting material.
  4. Hammer - you can also use it to straighten individual sections.
  5. Sandpaper - for cleaning frame elements before painting them.
  6. Thin wire - for twisting lampshade elements (connecting wire, 1 mm in diameter will be enough).
  7. Glue "Moment" - for a more reliable connection of elements.

Sometimes, in solving the problem of how to make a frame for a lampshade, you may need electrical tape for additional fixation of the elements, or a hacksaw for metal. Now the actual process of creating a wire frame, which can be represented in the form of several functional steps.

First step - diagram

After preparing the tools, you can get down to business. First, draw a lampshade on paper, how it should look in accordance with your personal tastes. It is also worth thinking carefully about its shape. In this case, the dimensions of the structure must be indicated in the diagram.

If fabric is chosen as the finishing material, then you cannot do without a full-fledged frame. It will maintain the shape of the product. However, when using paper, you can get by with basic rings.

Second step - preparation

For a wire lampshade frame with your own hands, you can choose aluminum material with a diameter of 4 mm. The required length is calculated by the formula: L=π*D, where π is 3.14 (the well-known number pi), D is the diameter of the lampshade circumference (shown earlier in the diagram). You just need to add another 100 mm for the connection. Now all that remains is to cut out the required length with a hacksaw.

Third step - foundation

At this stage, the lower ring of the frame is made, and the connection should be made in an overlap (5 cm). Another wire (connecting) is wound at this point. The connection itself should be impregnated with glue - this will strengthen the product. The top ring is made in a similar way.

Fourth step - ribs

It is worth tackling the side ribs, for which the same wire (4 mm in diameter) will do. The height of the do-it-yourself lampshade frame for a floor lamp or table lamp is selected when creating the diagram, and now segments of the required length are measured, only you should also make a reserve of 120 mm for bends. The number of ribs can vary to varying degrees depending on the specific situation: 8, 12, 16 or more.

Afterwards, you can proceed to securing the segment to the upper and lower rings. To do this, each workpiece is bent with pliers, having previously measured 60 mm on each side. They are then held together with a thin connecting wire, just like when creating rings. All joints should also be thoroughly blotted with glue.

Fifth step - lamp socket

A special suspension should be prepared for the cartridge. To do this, you need to bend a loop of wire so that it compresses the cartridge well, and the ends will extend from it in opposite directions. With their help, the suspension will be fixed to the upper ring, as well as the side ribs.

Actually, that's all - the frame for the lampshade is made with your own hands and now all that remains is to decorate it beautifully. Just keep in mind that when using fabric, you should not screw in lamps with a power of more than 100 W.

Wire clothes hangers

If for some reason there is no material to make the frame, wire clothes hangers may come in handy. They need to be untwisted into even sections and straightened with pliers. After this, you can proceed to preparing parts for the lampshade frame.

The elements are connected in the same way as in the step-by-step instructions above. You can also fix it with glue or tape. At the same time, the manufacturing process itself is easy to cast - it will require much less effort. At the same time, you need to understand that the frame in this case will not be as rigid and durable as it should be.

Reinforcing mesh for plastering walls

This material can be found in any hardware store, and the meshes can have cells of different sizes depending on the conditions of use. For the lampshade frame with your own hands, you should choose a surface with cell sizes of 15x15 or 20x20 mm. To select the dimensions of the fragment, again, you should first draw up a diagram of the lampshade, where you should carefully indicate all the dimensions. After which the segment is simply rolled into a pipe, and the edges are connected with twisted wire, overlapping one or two cells.

Only in this case will the frame be in the form of a cylinder or a truncated cone. Therefore, if such a form does not contradict the style of the room and is completely satisfied with its appearance, then this is the best option. Otherwise, you'll have to find something else.

Fan grille

Many of us have once used a fan that has already become unusable. However, such a device has a useful element - a grid. It is usually present in all floor-mounted fans. So why not give it a second life?

In addition, a certain shape already exists - a kind of spherical segment. However, if desired, the frame can be deepened by securing an additional tier of the same wire at the bottom. Or, as another option, lining it with some material. Both will be quite appropriate.

Conclusion

It is not at all necessary to buy an expensive chandelier to decorate a room, bedroom, kitchen, living room and any other room. And if you consider how much they cost, it immediately becomes clear that it is easier to make a frame for a lampshade with your own hands. In addition, a homemade product can fit into the interior and add a bit of zest.

In addition, this is again pure psychology - looking at a frame made with your own efforts, especially with the support of friends and relatives, is many times more pleasant. The room immediately feels a special atmosphere of home comfort. Of course, if you approach the matter with soul and love.

Lighting can either transform or make any room uncomfortable. Suffice it to recall cold hospital corridors, and, for example, cafes, where there is always soft warm light.

Especially in winter, people miss the sun, so it is very important that there is always light at home. A special cozy atmosphere can be created with the help of various lamps or floor lamps. However, it is not always possible to choose a lamp that matches the interior of the room. But don’t be upset, because you can do it for any lamp.

DIY frame and base for lampshade

First you need to select a lamp or several lamps for which you need to make fabric lampshades. It is better to use lamps with energy-saving or LED lamps. Regular light bulbs can simply burn the fabric, so it’s better not to take risks.

Before you begin, you need to remove the frame for which the lampshade will be created. If the lamp does not have a frame, then it can be purchased, for example, in a special store or construction department.

Also, the frame for any lamp, be it a floor lamp, table lamp or chandelier, can be made independently. To do this you will need thick wire and pliers.

The base can have any shape. It will be easier to make a lampshade for a cylindrical or cone-shaped frame.

How to choose fabric for a lampshade

First of all, you need to choose a suitable fabric for the lampshade. You can use light, hard or dense material. If desired, you can even make a lampshade from wool, it all depends on the creator’s idea and the interior of the room.

If the frame consists of ordinary wire, it is better to use an opaque material to cover it. Dark silk, cotton and taffeta are suitable.

It is also worth remembering that the color of the fabric can give both cold and warm light. In the first case, you can use blue or green fabric, and in the second, yellow, orange or red.

Necessary materials for making a lampshade

Fabric lampshades can be done in different ways. If the new lampshade will be glued on top of a regular plain lampshade, then no preparatory work is required.

But if there is only a wire frame, then it is better to first coat it with paint and then wrap it with light or dark cotton tape.

To make the lampshade look neat, you need to sew it on a typewriter.

In addition, you will need:

  • iron;
  • a simple pencil;
  • ruler;
  • textile;
  • pins;
  • threads matching the color of the material;
  • kraft paper (or any thick paper, as well as whatman paper);
  • glue (you can take a special one for fabric or a universal one).

When all the necessary materials and tools are at hand, you can start sewing DIY lampshade made of fabric.

Master class on making a lampshade with your own hands

First step

First you need to make a template to cut the required amount of fabric.

There are two ways: if the frame is cylindrical, then you can measure the circumference and draw one line on the fabric, and then measure the height and draw a second line. After this, all that remains is to draw two more sides of the rectangle and cut out the template.

If the frame is cone-shaped, then you can lay out the paper, take a pencil and gradually roll the frame along the sheet, mark with a dotted line the lines of its sides.

The main thing is that the frame rotates completely; to do this, you can mark a reference point on it using a piece of thread or a pin. After this, you can connect the lines and cut out the template.

Second step

In order not to cut off more, or worse, less fabric, you need to attach the template to the frame of the lamp - it must completely fit. If the template is larger, you need to cut off the excess paper; if it is smaller, you will have to take the measurements again and make a new template.

Third step

When the size of the template matches the size of the base for the lampshade, you can begin to attach it to the fabric. If the material has a pattern, you need to position the template so that the drawn elements “look” in the right direction. You need to calculate everything so that, for example, you don’t cut off the head of a flying bird. Otherwise the lamp will look ugly.

The template must be applied to the wrong side of the fabric, and then it must be secured with pins. After this, you can carefully trace the template along the contour. If the fabric is dark in color, you can use not a simple pencil, but special fabric crayons or a piece of soap.

After this, you need to draw allowances. To do this, you need to draw lines at a distance of one and a half to two centimeters from the boundaries of the template.

Fourth step

Without removing the template from the fabric, you need to carefully remove the pins one at a time and wrap the seam allowances inside. The fold lines must be secured with pins.

Now you need to remove the template and thread the sewing machine. The threads must be chosen so that they are almost invisible on the fabric.

Fifth step

Now you need to sew the resulting part on a typewriter. This needs to be done only on three sides - one of the sides must be left untreated in order to then form a seam on the frame itself.

You need to stitch at a distance of five to seven millimeters from the edge. If desired, you can process the sections. But in any case, they will have to be hidden when the fabric is glued to the frame.

Sixth step

After this, you need to turn on the iron and iron the fabric piece well. If wrinkled parts remain, the fabric will not adhere well to the base, and the lampshade will look ugly.

Seventh step

The next part of the work must be carried out in a well-ventilated room. First you need to cover the work surface with unnecessary paper or an old tablecloth and lay out the fabric. Then you need to apply glue to it and leave it for some time, which is indicated in the instructions for the glue.

Eighth step

Now you can glue the fabric to the frame. You need to hide the raw cuts, and make the seam in such a way that the lampshade is covered with a stitched edge.

If the lampshade is attached to a wire base that is wrapped with cotton ribbons, there is no need to apply glue to the entire surface of the workpiece; it is enough only to the part that comes into contact with the frame parts. In this case, you need to stretch the fabric well.

Ninth step

The finished lampshade must be left for some time to dry completely. After about a day, you can put the lampshade on your favorite lamp and enjoy a beautiful object that will definitely decorate any interior.

Fabric lampshade decoration

Table lamp with lampshade looks much nicer than just a regular bare lamp. But if a monochromatic color is chosen for the lampshade, then you can decorate it in an original way. Here are some ideas on how you can make an interesting lampshade decoration out of fabric.

Lampshade in Provencal style

In order to decorate a plain lampshade, you will need a piece of fabric and fringe. Usually green, turquoise and pastel shades of colors are used, checkered colors or floral patterns are also suitable.

First, you need to select a suitable fabric for a plain lampshade and cut two strips from it - one to decorate the top of the lampshade. This strip of fabric should be long enough to completely wrap the circle and make a bow. The second strip should be the length of the circumference of the bottom of the lampshade, and fringe must be sewn to it. This can be done on a sewing machine.

All free edges of the fabric must be processed so that it does not fray. After this, using glue or thread with a needle, you need to attach the fringed ribbon to the base of the lampshade so that the fringe hangs down.

Then you need to decorate the top of the lampshade. To do this, you need to glue or also sew a ribbon along the circumference, and tie the free edges with a bow.

You can also use lace for a Provencal style lampshade. The good thing about this element is that it can simply be glued to the fabric.

You can make lace flowers, stripes, or completely cover the fabric lampshade with lace napkins.

Lampshade with fabric flowers

Another unusual idea that will allow table lamp with lampshade to become like a flowerbed - decorating with fabric flowers.

For flowers, fabric in delicate shades is perfect; you can use, for example, organza or chiffon, or you can simply take, for example, an old jacket, cut strips and twist roses out of them.

You can decorate a lampshade with just a few flowers, but if you have time and patience, you can make a whole bunch of flowers to completely cover the lampshade.

DIY lampshade made from scraps

If you have many pieces of different fabric at home, you can make a lampshade from multi-colored scraps.

In order to make such a lampshade, you need to use the technique of sewing pieces to a fabric base. The easiest way is to cut a piece of fabric to fit the frame and divide it into several wedges.

Then you need to sew patches to each wedge the way you like - you can sew strips of fabric diagonally, or make small squares. To avoid delaying the process, it is better to use a sewing machine.

After this, all the wedges with patches will need to be sewn together and glued to the base of the lampshade.

This lamp can fit perfectly into a country style!

Lampshade made of unusual materials

When you make a lampshade yourself, you can give free rein to your imagination and experiment. To make an original thing, you first need to find unusual material.

For example, in the kitchen, a lampshade made from burlap can look very interesting. This fabric transmits light well. Such a lampshade can be decorated with some wooden details, for example, clothespins or wooden beads and buttons.

You can also use grandma's old lace doilies for decoration. You can also write something on such a lampshade with white or black paint, as they usually write on bags.

For a teenager's room, you can sew a lampshade in . For this you will need denim. And you don’t have to buy it, you can just cut up old jeans - every person probably has such a thing.

Such a lampshade can be decorated, for example, with a denim pocket where you can insert an artificial flower or a piece of a checkered handkerchief. You can also use applique for such a lampshade. Pieces of leather are suitable for this.

For example, for a lamp that will stand in a girl’s room or bedroom, you can sew a delicate lampshade from mesh. This fabric can be found in any sewing store.

A lampshade made of several layers of mesh will look interesting - it will resemble a ballerina’s tutu or a fluffy skirt.

A chandelier in a room is not only a lighting fixture. Without exaggeration, we can say that it is the main decoration of the room. Handmade items are considered especially valuable. This allows us to highlight the special taste of the owners of the home, as well as their extraordinary and creative mind. Of course, this type of work is quite complex and requires increased concentration. But at the same time, when creating decorations for your home, you can find many interesting and extraordinary solutions in it!

This article presents some ideas for decorating a chandelier with your own hands, as well as instructions for them. Everything is written so simply and clearly that anyone can do it at home.

In order to make a chandelier, sometimes the most unusual materials are used. For example, everyone is already familiar with glass or wood, plastic, and so on. But sometimes, when you want something completely “unusual,” wooden skewers, glass wine bottles, jars, all kinds of tree branches, cardboard, and even straw come into play. You need to choose depending on the idea of the creator and the wishes of the apartment owners. You also need to take into account the general interior of the room where the finished product is supposed to be placed.

Interesting idea for a chandelier made from plastic spoons

Plastic spoons for disposable meals are one of the simplest and most easily available materials for creating a chandelier for a room. Their advantages are low price, a variety of colors, and such material will last for quite a long time. To create such an extraordinary chandelier, you will need a minimum of investments, both physical and material.

Materials:

  • empty drinking water bottle, 5 liters;
  • plastic spoons (their number depends on the size of the bottle);
  • glue for plastic;
  • an old chandelier (or rather, a socket from it);
  • sharpened knife.

Process of creation:

  1. First you need to prepare a plastic bottle for subsequent steps. Remove the label in advance, cut off the bottom, dry well.
  2. Then you need to remove the plastic spoons from the packaging and carefully cut off the unnecessary handles with a knife, leaving about 2-3 centimeters above the level of the “scoop”.
  3. You need to glue the scoop blanks to the base of the bottle. Apply a large amount of glue to the remaining “tail” and press it to the surface (with the convex side of the spoon facing out). It is necessary to cover the entire bottle in a circle until the entire perimeter is occupied by plastic “spoons”. It is advisable to arrange them in a checkerboard pattern and slightly move them together. This will leave fewer “free spots”.
  4. You need to remove the cartridge from the old unnecessary chandelier, and then place it in an already glued and dried bottle and fix it to the frame.
  5. A decorative bowl can also be made from plastic spoons: “scoops” are glued around the neck of the eggplant.
  6. Install and connect the chandelier, check its operation.

Note! The option of decorative painting or painting of spoons in absolutely any color is possible. Thus, your product will look even more beautiful and more original!

Chandelier made of plastic bottles in the shape of leaves

Another unusual option in the interior would be a chandelier made in the shape of leaves. It is created from simple plastic bottles, the variety of colors of which allows you to work in the most unusual colors and embody the most daring ideas.

Process of creation:

  1. Cut plastic bottles into blanks shaped like future leaves.
  2. For each workpiece, the sheet shape is finally fixed.
  3. Using a soldering iron with a thick tip and a one-sided bevel, you need to slightly fuse the sections of each leaf in order to give the future product the greatest effect.
  4. In the same way, using a soldering iron, you need to give the workpieces a sheet structure. You need to act extremely carefully and accurately, because you can easily make a hole in the plastic. Such a leaf with outlined veins and slightly fused edges will look complete.
  5. Using a hot needle, you need to melt several holes at the “leg” of each leaf in order to attach them.
  6. Using thin wire, form branches and screw them to a steel wire frame.

It would also be a great idea to make a new chandelier in the form of a lampshade for a floor lamp or a table lamp. Thus, it will be a great addition to the previous product!

Chandelier with paper butterflies

The most common product option is a chandelier with butterflies. And this is not without reason. Let's start with the fact that this option looks luxurious and expensive, and secondly, its production does not require any special physical costs. Thus, even a child can participate in creating a chandelier.

Process of creation:

  1. It is based on either an old chandelier or a similar frame. If you don’t have one, then you can take the simplest wooden or metal rim. If such material is not available, then, as an option, you can take thick wire and make about 2-3 skeins, so that a circle is formed.
  2. Cut out butterflies from paper according to the template. You need to take the butterfly template and adjust it to the desired size. The option also looks very unusual when butterflies of several sizes are located on the chandelier (again, depending on desire). Transfer the outlines onto paper and carefully cut out, preferably with a sharpened stationery knife, or small, non-rounded scissors. For the templates themselves, it is better to use a material that is dense, does not become very dirty and does not attract dust. For example, velvet paper is very poorly suited for the product, because in the future you will need to vacuum the chandelier quite often.
  3. Take a nylon thread or transparent fishing line and attach the butterflies to it. There are two ways to attach them: either by piercing the bodies of the butterflies, or by gluing them with silicone glue.
  4. Next, we attach the threads with butterflies to the base of the frame and decorate it.
  5. You can also try a fun variation by making a wire ball! As a basis, you should take a pendant from a chandelier and place several butterfly templates on it using a glue gun.

Fabric chandelier

This chandelier is also based on a frame. As in the previous version, either old metal frames or thick wire are suitable for its manufacture.

After you have pre-prepared the base, start cutting out the fabric from which the lampshade will be made in the future. How long the finished product will be depends on your desire, but it is worth considering that the width of the fabric must be the same as the diameter of the frame! Once you finish the pattern, you need to do a fitting.

Another nuance is that the top of the fabric will need to be sewn directly on the frame, which means that it (the frame) must be solid. Otherwise, if it is possible to thread it directly into the fabric, then you should first fold the top edge of the pattern and stitch it, and then iron it. Then we sew a seam on the side of the product.

To prevent the lampshade from losing its shape, you should pay due attention to the material. If the fabric is too light, “airy,” then the bottom of the product should be weighted. You can use cardboard or fishing line for this.

Carefully sewn fringe, lace or braid will look just as beautiful. But do not “overload” the product! The process of creating a fabric chandelier is similar to making a lace chandelier. So you can safely experiment with the materials that are placed on the frame.

Lamp made of threads and a balloon

Materials:

  • dense threads, such as wool, cotton, or jute rope - at least 1 meter;
  • cartridge;
  • petrolatum;
  • PVA glue;
  • a brush for applying glue and Vaseline (it is advisable that the brush does not fade);
  • 1 or 2 pieces of balloons (the first for working with it, and the second for checking the finished product, if desired);

Process of creation:

  1. Inflate the balloon to a certain size and secure it. Remember that the finished work will exactly follow the outline of the ball! Using a marker, draw a couple of circles at the top and bottom in order to determine the boundaries of thread winding.
  2. Using a brush, coat the entire perimeter of the ball with Vaseline.
  3. Pour PVA into a plastic container and thoroughly process the threads with it (It is not advisable to apply glue to the entire length of the threads at once! Process them as you wind them around the ball!).
  4. Taking into account the boundaries that you drew with a marker, wind the threads around the ball. Do not forget that the future appearance of the product depends on the density with which you wind it.
  5. After wrapping, you need to leave the product for a day until it is completely dry; After complete drying, you need to burst the ball and remove it through the holes.
  6. Cut a spot in the top and insert the cartridge.
  7. To be completely sure that the product is strong, you can insert a balloon into it and inflate it. In a similar way, you can check the flexibility and reliability of the lampshade.

Alternatively, you can paint the structure with spray can or acrylic paint, and attach all kinds of decorative decorations to it, such as butterflies, artificial flowers or beads. Also, a great idea would be to arrange several balls in the form of a bunch of grapes and fasten them together.

Wine bottle chandelier

This version of the chandelier is a little more complicated than the previous ones. Making a chandelier this way is quite difficult; the manufacturing process will require care and attention. However, you will like the result!

Materials:

  • wine bottle;
  • glass cutter;
  • sandpaper for sanding edges;
  • cartridge;
  • electrical wire;
  • metal or wooden frame, rim.

Process of creation:

  1. First you need to prepare the bottle itself for further manipulations with it. The first step is to draw a straight line around the perimeter at the level you need. This is required in order to cut off the bottom of the bottle using a glass cutter;
  2. To avoid cutting yourself on the glass, you need to sand the sharp edges with sandpaper;
  3. Pull the wire through the neck of the bottle and then connect the socket;
  4. Attach the bottle to the frame.

You can also decorate the bottle with all sorts of decorative items, or leave it in its original form. In any case, it will look original and impressive.

The number of products on the frame depends on your desire. You can either leave one bottle or secure four or more bottles at once.

Laserdisc chandelier idea

This idea is great for those who have a large number of laser discs left in the house, but don’t dare throw them away. It’s worth noting right away that manufacturing options and the result can be very different. It all depends on your imagination and creativity!

Materials:

  • two round wooden planks of different thicknesses, and which are slightly larger in diameter than the disks;
  • racks made of metal or wood;
  • Fluorescent Lamp;
  • magnetic switch;
  • disks.

Process of creation:

  1. Make a hole in a thicker board and install a starter with a switch in it.
  2. Then connect it all to the lamp.
  3. String disks onto the lamp.
  4. Place the stands around the discs and secure the top.

The finished product will delight its owners for a long time, and it does not require special care. It is not advisable to place this type of chandelier in a child’s room so that the child cannot harm himself (only if the chandelier hangs out of reach).

Shabby chic chandelier

To create spectacular lighting in a room, you can also make a chandelier from fabric or beads. The result will be a kind of candelabra or lampshade in the “shabby chic” style.

Materials:

  • a ready-made metal or wooden frame (or it can be made from an old hoop, garden basket, thick wire);
  • socket and lamp;
  • chains and threads for decoration;
  • all kinds of beads and seed beads.

Working on such a lampshade is not difficult, but it is a very painstaking task. Such chandeliers usually consist of two or three levels of rings, which are located on top of each other. It all depends on the size of the chosen bases. If you take rings of the same diameter, the finished product will be made in the “modern” style.

One of the important points is that before you start decorating the chandelier, you need to paint and wrap the frames with decorative materials!

The approximate consumption of beads is:

  • For the lower part of the lampshade - 16 mm beads, about 15-17 pieces per thread;
  • For the upper part of the lampshade - 12 mm beads, about 35 pieces per thread.

Naturally, when stringing beads on a thread, you can increase or decrease their number or the degree of thread tension. But it is still advisable to stock up on materials in excess of the norm.

The essence of the work is to hang threads with beads in a “waterfall” or “cascade” so that they flow downward along the structure.

In order to create the effect of “muting” the light, you can sheathe the frame with thick fabric.

A DIY chandelier will definitely add a fresh touch, originality and beauty to your interior. You will immediately notice how the room will sparkle with new colors, and your guests will sincerely admire your creativity, hard work and original taste!
